Show me your duna landers

Recommended Posts

Simple lander I made in career for a Duna landing, with orbital rendezvous (this is not coming back to Kerbin on its own). A bit on the short side in terms of dV, if you're not feeling confident I recommend using a lighter capsule (Mk-1 Can is good and light) and taking fewer science equipment.

A simple lander is fine for Duna, this one weighs 10t and does the job. If you're not sure if you're going to make it, you can use delta-V maps and KER (or any dV readout) to properly engineer your lander.

For a direct ascent mission, your lander should be a bit bigger since it would have to have enough fuel to do the ejection burn at Duna.

Heavy standard lander, this one has detatchable lateral boosters, great for stable landings. It has just enough Dv to get back to kerbin, but laterals have to be detatched. The base I think come from the MOLE pack, but could be wrong, really just the mid 2.5m tank and a 4 way attacher work just as well! Also @Ven revamp makes everything look soo pretty!!

Don't tend to need the return capability though, got two light landers with their auxilary tanks which are left in orbit of Ike and Nyke (use @Xenonclave's planet pack which are brilliant!)

Below is a light lander.

A note on Duna the atmosphere is pretty weedy, it only really works to stop you for the bottom 15km or so, so you only need to get a good atmospheric TWR for about 30sec, then 1.1 TWR in Vac is fine

i posted my mission to duna with base an all you can see my lander but it needs refuel in Duna to climb again unles you're awesome pilot

if you still need help i can give you my craft files

I don't have any pics right now, but if you take a mk1 pod+chute+heat shield, and do an asparagus of flt-400 and lv-909, with detachable airbrakes and chutes, that will do both Duna and Ike and back to Kerbin in the same mission, if you can get it down to Duna, which should be mostly-easy.

The only manned vehicles I sent to duna -

It's rather cramped but can actually fly itself from the surface of Kerbin to the surface of Duna and return, with no external support and only the cost of fuel.

If you prefer a little more luxury, an earlier design -

This is a 5 seater.  It cannot quite return from Duna to Kerbin without some refuelling , though it could take off again and reach Duna orbit.  Fortunately it has a docking adapter port.  I also built a "hotter" version of this ship, with disposable booster jets and drop tanks, with enough delta v to come home again

  • 2 weeks later...

I don't build in career mode so efficiency has no purpose other than to limit craft design.

Here are the two landers (and some other pics) from the Duna Direct pack I released last year:

You may or may not be I ter dyed in this thread:

Unfortunately, a lander in career mode will have a lot more implications than it usually would. I would recommend making a Duna mission in sandbox mode first, then trying in it career. Also if you haven't sent a probe to Duna, do that. It's a lot easier to learn how to fly to Duna by doing several missions, each going slightly farther than the last one (example: flyby probe > orbiter probe > lander probe > lander probe with rover (optional) > sample return probe > crewed mission).

Of course, I've never sent anything larger than a small probe lander to Duna myself, so all my advice could be meaningless...

Looks like I use "of course" too much.
