Single-Stage-To-Anywhere Challenge!

Recommended Posts

I was messing around in the SPH the other day and I thought I might propose an SIngle Stage To Anywhere challenge. Here are the rules:

1 - Needs to look like a plane. A rocket with an ISRU is boring.

2 - It can take off/land vertically from landing legs on planets/moons with no atmosphere, but must be able to glide and land horizontally if there is an atmosphere.

3 - Needs to be able to mine and convert (obviously).

4 - Has to carry at least 2 Kerbals.

5 - Stock only. I want to keep it a level playing field.

I will score each entry up to 5 points for looks, 5 points for efficiency/range and 5 points for manuverability/takeoff and landing.

Please submit pics of your craft flying on Kerbin, in orbit somewhere and landed and mining on a planet/moon outside of kerbins SOF. Craft files are even better as it means I can test them :) .

I will upload pictures of my SSTA/fail later today.

Good luck!

Hi @Benji13

Your challenge proposal sounds interesting but you might take a look at the challenge posting rules above,
your idea is beefy enough for a good thread, and we wanna see your entry (or fail....) also...

I second what Mikki said. This looks like a fun challenge, but I think it's currently underdeveloped. For example, what exactly does range mean if it has ISRU? And what do you mean by efficiency? Fuel to LKO? dV left on LKO?  And maneuverability? how are you going to judge that if you aren't going to fly the craft yourself? Also, a completely subjective 1-5 scoring system just  really doesn't sound like much fun in general. If you're going to put hours and hours of work into a task,  It's much preferable to be judged by some objective standard rather than by just the whims of the challenge host. I suggest you go take a look at the K prize thread and see how they score different achievements there. Awarding different numbers of points, explicitly stated beforehand, for landing on and returning from different bodies, is a scheme that has worked quite well in the past.   If you come up with something that looks reasonable and unambiguous, I'll gladly give it a whirl.

This thread is quite old. Please consider starting a new thread rather than reviving this one.
