How do I access Kerbals in the files?

open KSP/saves/yoursavename/persistant.sfs in your favorite text editor, and do a search for those names. Note that you might have to edit in multiple places.

Though... I have a HUGE persistant folder. Where are the Kerbals in it?

What did you do? Did you backup your save? Because if not, I recommend you undo whatever you did and make a copy of your save before you do anything else so you don't lose it.

Here are a couple idea:

  • If you edited the persistent file and now it does not work, do you have any recent quicksaves available?
    • If so, rename one to "persistent."  This should let you load the game again although it may be at an earlier time depending on how recent the quicksave is.
    • If you don't have any quicksaves (or if they are old), you may have to go back through the changes you made previously and try to undo them.
  • Kerbal names come up in a lot of places throughout the save file as previously mentioned.
    • I prefer searching (Ctrl+F) for "Roster" first which is toward the end of the file.
    • Then, either scroll through or search for the particular Kerbals you want to edit.
      • Find the line where it says:  state = KIA/MIA/Assigned/Available
      • To bring them back, change to:  state = Available

It is always a good idea to backup the persistent file before editing just in case something goes wrong.  Here is a link to the KSP Wiki talking about Modifying Kerbals and what the different parameters are.

Okay. I did delete the "die" with getting them back

Sorry, not quite sure what you mean by that.  In general, just deleting something in the file can cause problems; it needs to be replaced with something else.

Ah I see, my mistake; to be honest I haven't looked that closely at the Career and Flight Log portions.  Everything up and running again?
