Clean your keyboard

i have a system for cleaning keyboards. membrane keyboards are easy (if its a sealed membrane, dishwasher). otherwise gut it, clean the keys and the casing. remove the board and membrane layers. if there is no gunk in them just set them aside, otherwise you need to clean the layers.  with alcohol and let dry thouroughly. when everything is dry, reassemble.

i did find a keyswitch board in a dumpster awhile back, still haven't cleaned it beyond washing the keycaps (and 3d printing replacements for missing ones). but i still need to clean the internals.

If I really feel the urge to jettison waste from my keyboard, which is very seldom, I'll pitch up my keyboard 135 degrees, lithobrake the underside to the surface a few times and clear the FOD that came out, level off the keyboard and come to a landing.

I just kinda turn it almost upside down and give it a couple of good whacks, then I put it back down. :P

Shopvac.  None of those piddling little battery operated computer vacuums for me, works great and has for 35 years.  Sure once in a while I accidently pull a cable out of its socket but that's easily fixed.  Of course I don't eat and type at the same time.  The real germ ridden piece of equipment though is the mouse...I have a feeling the human species may be wiped out by a disease mutated from someone's computer mouse.

I cannot clean my keyboard. It has a plastic covering under the keys so it doesn't get much in there anyway. Proof: Spilled milk on my keyboard. Half of board covered. No problems.

been noticing a lot of keyboards that are designed like that. the one im using now has them. they have drainage holes that pass through the membrane and out the bottom of the case. in theory you could run water through them and clean it out that way.

I have a laptop, so I have a feeling the water route would not go very well... There's that air-in-a-can-stuff, maybe I can pinch the nozzle to fit it into the keyboard.

I got a new keyboard not too long ago, it had those "raised" keys so I thought cool! Easy to clean.

Not a week after I bought it I spilled coke all over it.

I may as well have just pooped directly into the keys.

With a membrane keyboard, you can take them right apart no problem. For a mechanical I'm less inclined to do that, just pop off the keys and vacuum under them, use a cotton bud for any stubborn dirt. As for the keys themselves, wipe with a damp cloth. Takes a while, but you're only gonna do it a couple of times a year.
