What's the deal with "following?"

I have explicitly followed a few threads I don't want to lose track of... when I check my followed threads... it's every single thread I have ever posted into, which makes "following" 100% useless.

I see no setting for this at all.

Following downtime on July 25th a lot of 'follow user' records were unfortunately lost.

I don't know if the downtime affected just 'follow user' records or if it affected all followed content for some users, but this could be why :(

Seems to be just "follow user" stuff, my followed threads were unaffected.

Actually, there is. At the very top of the screen there's a box that says "follow" in a light grey arrow that points to a number. If you click that box, you can either follow or unfollow the forum tread. If you reply to any thread, the forum defaults to it as an indication you want to follow a thread. Simply revisit the thread, click the "follow link".

A new box will pop up where you can set your notification preferences. Simply click the red "UNFOLLOW" button on the lower right of the box.

You can change that in "Notifications Settings".

Yeah, I have used the follow at the top of the page. I checked my followed threads, and every thread I had posted in was marked followed. I turned the settings off, then on again, and that seemed to fix it.

Right now the little box in the top right is checked and says I am following THIS thread, and guess what, I'm not following this thread. I never told it to follow this thread. Every thread I post in gets followed, then I have to unfollow it. This defeats the purpose. I thought I had fixed it, but if I have to do something with every thread, I might as well just ignore the functionality (since there isn't any).

Try clicking the notification bell icon at the top of the page and then "Notification Settings", the options to auto-follow threads you start or reply to are there. Won't help with the stuff you've already followed but will keep new ones from being added unless you do so explicitly.

OMG, thank you!

I looked for it under, you know, "Settings" under my name, where I expected all settings to reside. It never occurred to me to look under notifications.

I don't think "following" is working anyway.  Just recently (after July 25th) I "followed" the Daily Kerbal forum and I don't get any notifications at all when a new thread is posted there.

Y'know, know that I think about it, that happens to me too. Could that be because the SQUAD account is anomalous?

This thread is quite old. Please consider starting a new thread rather than reviving this one.
