analyzing the kraken.

Recommended Posts

Hi guys!

I would like to learn more about the kraken, but I do not know how. What causes some of the krakens to happen, are they reproducible, and where should I go to do my tests? (currently I can go to Kerbin, the mun, and orbit around the sun.) I have a few ideas for tests, but any suggestions are welcome. Also, I could not decide if this should go in the general discussion, or this one, so if it is the wrong one please move it.

Thanks!

Version 1.1.3 is on a new version of the Unity engine so most of the known Kraken bugs have been fixed.

I'd say this is indeed the right place for such a thread though.

Here's the wiki page detailing a lot of the Kraken bugs from past versions:

ok thanks! I do not have 1.1.3, I have 1.1 or 1.1.1 :). So it might work for me!

One that's not on the list and I'm not aware of a proper name for it.  I call it the Kracken Drive.  It generally happens during boarding or leaving a craft in flight.  I've seen Kerbals thrown at 1000 m/s.  Examining the log when the result was immediately catastrophic showed the Kerbal apparently had a reversed velocity vector and smacked his rocket at twice it's orbital speed.  Other instances have resulted in heading away from the rocket at something like it's orbital velocity.

However, I've heard from someone who had seen resulting velocities of .01c--something that couldn't result from mishandling orbital speed.  I do not know what version, though.

Note that I have yet to see this in 1.1.3.

Also, one that seems to be a fair pain with 1.1.3--the game refusing to accept any rocket-related commands after a Kerbal exits his craft and gets stuck.  The game is not hung, you can move your view at will and things continue in their orbits like they should but that's it.  Alt-F4 is the only way out.  This appears to be triggered by a quick EVA after switching to the craft, since I have taken to waiting a few seconds I haven't seen it.

Does this happen with large or tiny crafts? And do you know where it happened (Kerbin orbit, In space between Kerbin and the mun, etc.). I will try to recreate it and make a new (and updated) list on the Wiki with the ones I find. I have noticed that for some reason my Kerbals seem prone to getting out onto their ladders on EVA, then promptly starting to slide down them, in both a vacuum and on Kerbin.

The most common way I've seen it was exiting a Kerbal from whatever he was stranded in but I have done little EVA in orbit for other reasons.  The world doesn't seem to matter.

By "stranded" do you mean that it was a vehicle stuck without fuel somewhere? If so I have the perfect ship for it! It's a first attempt at a mun rocket that can get to orbit, and then promptly jettison all remaining fuel and engines back into Kerbin due to a glitch where I mixed up 2 different action groups.

I'm talking about the Kerbal rescue missions--if you count the price of recruiting Kerbals they pay very well indeed if you can make them part of something larger.  (I rarely launch tourist buses clear full, I can often pick up a Kerbal for ~100m/s)  I have yet to strand a rocket due to insufficient fuel, although I have had to send rescue missions a few times for kerbals whose rocket was in some fashion deficient.

Are you playing on the demo or do you have the full game? Nothing related, just a question I had since you said you could only go to Kerbin, the Mun, and the Sun.

I have the full version, I am just incompetent when it comes to building rockets. I either manange to land (barely) on the Mun, Or I overshoot the mun and end up in the sun's orbit instead. All Minimus attempts have ended with me running out of fuel half way there and getting stranded.

Oh. I don't play career that much (my Mun rocket is a modified stock craft ,so technically I don't have a unique shuttle to call my own for career) so I don't know how to replicate them. I have heard of a similar kraken. THe gyro kraken happens when yo uspin your ship at rapid speeds, then leave the shuttle. It causes all physics to break, the planets morph into 1, and you get hurled out of the solar system at high speeds. This also effects all saves.
