Archive Builds

Recommended Posts

When I go to select a build, I get a huge list of builds.  I can delete them, but I actually wish to keep them so I can look back at them to see a history of how my builds progressed.  It would be nice if I could archive my builds with-in a save its self, so that I can store these builds for Posterity.

I'm sure there are ways to share builds across saves, especially with mods, and with that I'm sure there's some way I can back up the builds and clean up my "Select a craft to load" list, but again, I'd like to be able to archive in the game its self, because different saves have different technology advancements, and some games I go airplanes first and try to do single stages to orbits, others I try to do stuff with as many solid boosters as possible, others I use only liquid boosters, and others are more 'conventional' doing whatever I feel is needed at the time. - I'd like to be able to look through the history of a save and watch as my Mun Lander Mk1 becomes a Mun Lander Mk42.

For that matter, it would be nice to have a Museum building that can be purchased and upgraded, and perhaps display the various craft of my choosing in different places and be able to load the museum up and look at them.  It might require some magic, maybe baking the skin of the ships and removing all the parts so it is just a 3D mesh, maybe even without any collision, in order to allow for faster-enough loading and rendering, but that would be neat!

The way I imagine it, I'd click on the craft in in the 'Select craft to load' menu, and down where it says Delete / Cancel / Load, there could be an extra button that says "Archive" and then it just stores it in another tab called "Archive" - There could even maybe be seperate VAB and SPH archives, I could see people wanting that, I'd be happy with just another "Archive" tab.  Then, it of course gets removed from the VAB or SPH list, so that only the most modern/current builds are in the list and I don't have to scroll through hundreds of builds to find the one I want, nor delete my old builds that I want to save for posterity.

Thanks Guys!  you've done a great job in creating this game, I'm jealous and love playing it.

Thanks for reading my suggestion,

I kinda disagree and agree.  The feature would be nice (especially on consoles since you can't just copy the files out of the save folder) but I disagree with your implementation.

What we need is a more versatile load/save dialog.  In the last Squad cast they talked about new header lines in the persistence.sfs.  They need to do that for craft and allow us to tag and filter our saved craft rather than archive them somewhere.  Then you could even tag it as archive and remove it by filtering archived craft, but it's much more versatile than you describe.  Ideally the tags would be text we create ourselves rather than pre-defined tags and we could filter by any one of them. One tag could be "stock craft" for example and replace the whole cheat menu option (at least in sandbox).

I'm on the same page as @Alshain on this.

A better system is needed, my 'favoured' method is a folder system, where we can create folders and sub-folders and name them as we like, and place ships in any folders we choose.  We can then hide and show the contents of whichever folders are appropriate to what we are doing.

Slightly off topic,  but the same should be done for flights in the Tracking Station too IMO

Kind of a museum folder would be nice, i used to backup some creations separatly but remembering them just about their name is quite difficult, a museum/ archive building would be a nice addon to this game, however cleaning up there is another issue after gigs of craftfiles...:0.0:

Absolutely! Both the VAB/SPH and desperately need some form of filing system. (That's probably why it gets suggested frequently.)
In an early career with only a dozen different ships on the lists it's hard to loose track. But in a long drawn play-through it can be a nightmare to find that specific design or flight you're looking for.

I have a bunch of old rockets that I've renamed to have the word "Historical" at the beginning of their names, so at least they group together in the alphabetical list.  I also use a "WIP" name prefix to group unfinished/experimental designs.  But yeah, a proper folder system would be nice.
