  1. 1. Have You/Will You be Affected by Hermine?

Recommended Posts

I'm pretty sure a lot of people on the forums know about the menace (or annoyance) known as Hurricane Hermine. It has been tracked since August 18th as a finicky tropical wave that wouldn't develop. Now that it has, Hermine is affecting all of the U.S East Coast and is proven to be a party crasher for anyone trying to celebrate Labor Day. Who here has been/will be affected by this storm? Also, this would be a good thread to have some discussions about tropical weather in general.

Hermine is long dead, so this thread will now talk about ALL active tropical cyclones.

Currently Active Tropical Cyclones

  • T.S. Ian (Atlantic)
  • Typhoon Meranti (W. Pacific)
  • Typhoon I-FORGET-ITS-NAME (W. Pacific)
  • T.S. Julia (Driving meteorologists crazy in the Atlantic)
  • TD12 (Atlantic)
  • Hurricane Orlene (E. Pacific)

Living in New Jersey, near the shore no less, we're expected to see some foul weather. I don't think it will be anything "drastic" at this point. Personally, I don't pay such storms much mind until they hit Category 3, as I've been through many 'good' storms in my lifetime.

Today was a nice day, cloud cover moving in, but cool with gentle breezes inland. It's beautiful outside right now. It would have been an excellent day for a sail out on the bay. Up on the beach is a different story, the surf is building... and, yea, they're out there on their boards. Our local report site(s) (Belmar / Manasquan) are showing me I'm missing out on a good day (boogie boarding)... I also like fishing out on the end of the jetty at Manasquan Inlet. :/

NWS Mt. Holly is giving me updates on a regular basis, basically calling for coastal flooding and high winds. Nothing new to me. Right now, it's a "Tropical Storm Warning", some 250 miles southeast of me.

Living in Stamford CT, it's clear tonight. I actually did some astronomical observing with my Meade ETX-90RA, but the tiny finder (ordered a Rigel QuikFinder) made me get annoyed and come back inside.

Also, it's a tropical storm now.

I caught a bunch of images of Hermine's northern clouds yesterday. Here are the best (and weirdest) of them:

Farewell for now, Hermine. The clouds will be back on Monday, along with wind gusts of at least 40 mph. I should have some really cool photos for that.

If you click on one of the links I posted above (Belmar or Manasquan), you'll see real-time video of the beach, surf and sky. If I have time today, I'll see if I can take a ride over to Manasquan and snap a few pictures. It's a beautiful day here right now, sunny and 73F degrees.

Nope, i live in a land far far away...

(The Netherlands, or you could say Holland because i actually live in North-Holland)

There sometimes are some big windy days here, but i should not call them hurricanes or tornados. Just wind storms.

EDIT: Just found out small hurricanes do appear in the Netherlands, probably just too small to name it.

Hmmm, how did I miss this thread earlier?

I live in the town of Port Richey, in Pasco County, Florida, and I'm reading now that apparently we got the worst of the flooding. I know there are some places just a few blocks from here that were evacuated and folks still can't go near. But I didn't realize we got it worse than anyone else so far. Luckily our house is slightly uphill, and on a bit of a slope, so all the water drains right down the road and turns it into a small river, but it's never gotten all the way up the yard to our house.

  • 2 weeks later...

Well, since Hermine is long dead, let's talk about other tropical cyclones (that was the plan when Hermine died).

  • Tropical Storm Ian: Another new "I" name. Unlike other I-Names from this name selection (like Ivan and Igor), Ian won't get retired this year. Forecasts say it should become a strong tropical storm before being eaten by a polar extratropical cyclone around Friday or Saturday. Ian's formation later unleashed the peak of the season, because two days later came...
  • Tropical Storm Julia: An oddball cyclone, one that FORMED ON LAND! What the Duck?! Also, Julia went straight to TS status without becoming a Tropical Depression. It will do this odd loop track off the Georgia/South Carolina coast that has been giving forecast modelers head trauma since the afternoon of 9/14/16.
  • TD12 (Soon to be Karl): I noticed this guy forming on the Cabo Verde islands since 9/12/16, when Ian formed. TD12 also formed less than 12 hours after Julia, on 9/14/16. This storm will become Tropical Storm Karl, then back into a depression, and then start re-strengthening around Sunday. This is looking a lot like the early history of Hurricane Gloria from 1975, which is saying something since it caused nearly $1 billion in damage and got its name retired. Will Karl have a similar fate? It is too soon to tell. The Spaghetti Models won't come until TD12 gets the name Karl. :(
