Carrier Landing Challenge

Recommended Posts

Did you know the first jet-powered plane to land on a carrier was a Sea Vampire?

Your challenge is to do the same! But... where's the carrier, you may ask. There aren't any in KSP! Behold my mad MS Paint skills:

So now that you know where to land the rules are:

-Each competitor starts with the total of 115 points
-Each crossed line takes away 5 points (there are 23 lines)
-You have to approach the "carrier" from north (the white arrow)
-Don't touch the grass (imaginary boundries of the "carrier")
-The only engine you can use is 1xJuno
-You have to set all of your brakes to 200% (keep in mind this is more of a tip than a strict rule)
-You can't use any powered wheels
-Take screenshots of: brakes settings, the approach and your landing position (top view, just so it's easier to calculate the score)
-No VTOLs
-No chutes
-No external seats (either a probe body or a closed canopy cockpit)

Here's my entry:

WHO SAID THERE ARE NO AIRCRAFT CARRIERS IN KSP http://imgur.com/a/kBanf

BTW thanks for making me realize for the first time that setting brakes to 200 can make my carrier landings much easier!

@drtricky Challenges are just for fun :)

What is cheating in a single player game?

(IDK who said the above quote)

Wait... Should I edit the craft file or how do I get 200% brakes?

You right click on the gear part in the editor. There should be a slider labelled "brakes". Just turn it up to 200.

Also, i did it with this little ultralight glider. Lost the engine, but as you can see i only crossed 5 lines, so that's 90 points for me!

How de*** do I turn up a slider that is already maxed?

Could this be caused by that that you are playing on 1.1.3 or 1.2.0 and I am on 1.1.0?

//EDIT: @Veeltch please update the leaderboard!

We're on 1.2 so probably that's why you don't have that.

Well, it was the nosewheel of course - reset it, and after hitting the pond wall for half an hour got the thing down finally. Needs to be a bit slower ( not sure how I can to that, tbh ), but hey, landed a "Vampire" on the "carrier".

Just my 2¢ here but landing distance should be at the nose wheel.

If a carrier was 100m long and you landed the nose wheel at the 101m mark you just fell over or in any case missed your landing. The carrier was too short.

In the same manner if the nose wheel was 10 meters from the end the carrier was 10 meters longer than it need to be.

Minor improvement. Persuading this thing to stop after touchdown is not easy :S other than when I clipped the grass & it just about stopped dead.

Edit: landing obsolete, deleted pics to reduce thread spam.

Obligatory pond shot...

Wasn't there a weird US aircraft a bit before that that had a jet and a piston-powered prop, which was at least partially jet-powered, that landed on a carrier?

There was, but Sea Vampire was the first pure jet aircraft to do so.

I have an old micro fighter, made just for carriers. I may give this a shot. Can I use retro rockets as an arrestor wire substitute?

Nope, sorry. Only Juno and brakes.

But you can flip the plane just before the touch down. I kinda want to see that happen to be honest.

Yup. That's why I measure it from the nose, not the back.
