Most Common Vessel Name

  1. 1. Do you have, or have you ever had, a vessel named "CommSat", "ComSatt", "CommSat I" or minor variations thereof?

My names are probably less common; but for regular programmes I stick to them. Small rockets (1-Kerb capsule with FL-T tanks pushed by a Swivel) are "Kerbury", mid-sized (Rockomax parts with Mk-1 cockpit and a Skipper) are "Kermini" and large boosters (Kerbodyne parts) are...you guessed it - "Kerpollo". Individual vessels that don't fall into those categories get their own names. My orbital rescue craft (hauling 16 lander can re-entry pods) is "Kerb your Enthusiasm"; my one-time science vessel to the Mint Frosted Moon (Which I'm still trying to figure out how to get back) is Minimus Decimus Meridius". I currently have a major 2-ship expedition on the way to the next planet out; the Kerballed ship is "Duna Hustle" and the robot fuel/lander/rover carrier is "Duna Duna Want My Love?". I sent what turned out to be the very appropriately-named "KerBAMM!" on one half of a two-way trip to the Mun; rudely interrupted by the tiny detail of putting the descent engines on the same decoupler as the engine-bell fairings. Oops.

But after all that, my most common ship name is "Untitled Space Craft Debris". :D

I'm only going with 'no' because mine are more like 'relay probe alpha' and so on for newer designs. The manned things I end up naming either after early NASA vehicles or in a more compact form. The main rover, for instance, is XRV-1 (insert whatever mod I'm getting the parts from here because I have no patience for the vanilla rover centerpiece which is essentially a grey rectangle last I looked), and later modifications for different missions will generally follow that. When I edit stock ships I tend to do the same thing. Someone named their thing XR-8 Ravenstar or something? If I edit that to change its mission and stuff, it's probably going to end up with XR-9 on the start of its name, and then maybe something at the bottom of its description.

And I would name them according to the contractor.

I used to do that - until I realised that the name didn't actually count.

When I played with RemoteTech, back in 0.90, I made a point of abusing satellite launch contracts for my commsat network.

Well, that's what I do now. Much better to be paid to put up your commsats rather than having to pay for them.

Still, doing that does have a tendency to leave gaps in your coverage.

....Count? For what? o_O

I named them that way because it pleased me, really. It never occurred to me that the name might or might not have relevancy for anything else.

My careers all have a "Munar Lander Mk1". Except once I searched high and low for my lander, couldn't find it anywhere, got really annoyed that I had to redesign it, to find that I had called it "Lunar Lander Mk1" instead, and therefore had to search under the L rather than the M.

[edit] Actually, come to think of it, I think that by now "contract trash" is the most common name in my careers. That's what I name all vessels that I essentially will discard after they get a contract done.

Usually, the first two or three stations I put up are Kerbinlab I,II,etc, unless they're failed attempts at on orbit construction of interplanetary craft, then they're usually Duna Explorer I or something like that.

My Comsat array is always named "Whisperer" and I have variants per body. For example, the Keosynch array is Whisperer G , and for Mun, it's Whisperer M, etc. Otherwise, I have programs that every craft falls under.
