[Solved] Minmus glitch party? Is this a kraken?

Recommended Posts

1.2.1 KSP x64 Linux player, only mods loaded are KER and Part Angle Display (all informational), Debian x64 stable with backports to Mesa drivers (OpenGL renderer string: Gallium 0.4 on AMD CYPRESS (DRM 2.45.0 / 4.7.0-0.bpo.1-amd64, LLVM 3.8.1)   OpenGL core profile version string: 4.1 (Core Profile) Mesa 12.0.4  OpenGL core profile shading language version string: 4.10), GPU is HD5850.

I have sent a crew to Minmus to maximize their XP and at vehicle view I start to experience this constant "surface trashing":

When viewing the planet via Map view:

The effect is persistent over quick/saves (within the same game), KSP restarts and hard reboots. I only encountered it on Minmus.

Now, I also have an other easy-sandbox game for my kid and I loaded it, mashed a basic lander and the cheat-set orbit to Minmus, I get no glitches (this is same system).

Is there a way to remove the Kraken from the save and never to encounter it?

Btw, this system runs on Xeon with 12gb of ECC ram... pretty sure that wasn't hardware fault. Was it?

Edit: and I encountered it in a easy-sandbox game while cheat-orbiting to Pol. This one doesn't seem to like the higher distance to planet and vanishes upon certain zoomout.

@sal_vager Thanks for such a fast response! Just checked with xsensors and GPU is fine at 68C when KSP is running.  I have Mesa (libgl1-mesa-dri) 10.3.2 in stable and 12.0.4 in backports.
I assume by latest stable you mean 12.x branch (10.x is ancient) that still did not make it into official Debian backports. Its weird I never had this issue before. Going to wait then, thank you Sal!

I think it is Mesa 12.x, this came up a few weeks ago and the member solved it by updating Mesa, that might have been Fedora though so the newer Mesa was available.

Edit:

I may be losing my mind, this is all I could find and it was not resolved.

Can you try forcing OpenGL and direct rendering, see if one or both fixes this.

-force-gfx-direct -force-glcore

Also try with anti-aliasing disabled, that has caused trouble in the past with the Mesa drivers.

@sal_vager Thank you!!
1. this is exact my bug! To the finest details, artifact trashing is identical.
The issue is seen on minmus and pol, triggers to 100% at lowest possible altitude or surface - but may not trigger at minmus immediately, mostly starts at screen angles - when planet takes half of screen or less, as if "observing the horizon".
2. "-force-glcore" fixes it as it looks!   I have run the game with both flags first, then only with "-force-glcore" twice - every single time issue is gone. Run without the flags two times in between - issue was 100% reproducible on Pol without flag, but not on Minmus (with this save). Run with "-force-gfx-direct" as well, that one did not prevent issue to appear.

Well, at least it does not crash right away, like Mesa 11 did...

Also, you might want to know that "LC_C=all" thing is still needed if system locale differs from US (en_US.UTF-8).

Without it I experienced configuration resets and screen resolution falling back to 1280/windowed (default one) each time I went into Settings.
My previous install was with en_US locale, so I experienced this only now.

Glad it's working @Kerbal101, it seems Unity isn't detecting OpenGL correctly unless forced, it's a bit of a worry that you need to use LC_ALL=C though, as locale  agnosticism is set in Unity, it should always write cfg files using period as a decimal delimiter instead of comma.
