Why is it every time they update the game my old spacecraft are no longer compatible! Im tried of losing craft I designed every time there is an update; why don\'t they start making this game backwards compatible already? This really pisses me off!

The game is an ALPHA. As in, it is IN EARLY DEVELOPMENT. There are going to be massive changes on the game\'s most basic level. You should have expected this from the very beginning.

As a (non KSP) developer let me say that as a rule, backwards compatibility would literally take enough time to remove one feature from each release. As Dizzle said, live with Alpha releases breaking compatibility so we can all stay friends. :)

Also I personally don\'t want to bother with my old ships considering the new parts they\'ve been adding with each release.

How many updates has it been and they cant fix this...?

Thing is, having backwards compatibility would have been impossible with this update even if they wanted to. The old command pods are no longer in the game, and there has been a re-scale. The old designs wouldn\'t have worked anyway.

Then leave and come back when the game is finished. You obviously can\'t handle the way Alpha-stage development works.

Craft compatability has been broken more times than I can remember, and it\'s only going to continue at this point.

And let\'s have backwards compatability in Alpha and bottleneck everything. Real smart.

It\'s in alpha state. Making the updates back-compatible would simply be a waste of time. Wouldn\'t you rather they focus on developing the game?

As a note, this is standard with all alpha games. Backwards-compatibility just isn\'t there.

Thanks for telling me what I can and cant handle I need for you as well as asked you for that information! And yes my point is the fact that it has been broken for a while and you would think 10 or so (not sure on the exact number) updates in it would be something fixed already. Also don\'t play this off like im the only one a little frustrated. Also you spelled compatibility wrong twice 8)

It\'s not a problem to be fixed, it\'s the natural way of game development. Feel free to continue playing .15 if you\'d like to. I know I\'m keeping all of my versions as a historical archive for later on down the road.

Yea that\'s probably what ill do; it is just a little frustrating because some craft I spent a few hours on making. Nice avatar by the way; I used it once as a lab report cover.

The number of updates mean nothing. The more code you\'re keeping piled on for the game to read, the longer it takes for it to reach the end to do one thing. The result would be that the game is slower and requires more optimization.

And woo-hoo spelling mistakes. Who doesn\'t do that? Get over yourself. ::)

If you really want to use your old ships, I heard that if you add in the Mk1 cockpit from older versions it makes your ships compatible again. However, I believe you\'ll need to edit the newer Mk1 pod to make sure the game won\'t over-write it.

I don\'t think that will work but thank you any!

The game is currently in early development, and since we haven\'t finalized even the basic file format of the saves, you should expect some breakage between versions. Although we try to maintain some stability when upgrading to new versions, it\'s not something that should be expected at this stage, especially when parts that are in the older versions are replaced with better ones. Therefore, at this stage, breakage of old saves are not a bug and should be expected.

Nothing about the game is 'broken,' because everything about the game is incomplete. Say you\'ve taken your car apart so that you can make improvements and put it back together as a better car. It may not run at that point, but that doesn\'t mean that it\'s broken or that somebody is screwing up. And while you\'re doing that, say that you give your car better tires. Would it then make sense to make the car backwards compatible so that you can swich back and forth between tire sets while driving? Sure, it could be done, but it would take an awful lot of work, just to retain acccess to the inferior old tires. Why not just use the new ones instead?

This game is still in alpha-state development, and things like this will continue to happen, which is why they only charged you $15 (or whatever it was) instead of full game price. It\'s not a full game yet, and it doesn\'t have all the features and polish a completed game should have. It will eventually, but the meantime, you get early access for a reduced price. ;D
