Except it looks like the default constellation config is accounted for in the logs, so... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Here we go : In this line of code, you are reading a key from dictionary without checking if the key exists or not, basically if the key is not there, you need to first add the key manually with proper values, if the key is there, change the values. This needs to be handled in case the key is not present. And I'm not sure if in my log file there will be more methods like this or not. In short, you should never "assume" that the key will be present. Always do the sanity checks while coding and handle possible exceptions if you can like this one. Automatic channel selection when a vessel changes SOI. actually I think it would be better to keep the mod the way it is now, think about the design challenge this would give us, yes, the user should be able to change the signal on the fly, but, what if we assume the signals are fixed? if a player wants to play this way, he/she has to think about number of dishes and antenna he/she would need on the ship. I was thinking more of "if you wanted to" you could specify a default master channel for each body, so if you are flying a ship and you change SOI then your ship''s master channel would automatically switch over to the proper channel for the relay network that you have setup. Hi, I found a way for pre-CNC vessels to automatically initialize for first time without having to switch to each vessel to force the initialization. You can try out the latest develop build if you would like. On unrelated note, I am trying to break CNC in KSP 1.11 with construction functionality and can't find any more surprise to fix. Ground stations can have multiple frequencies. So for ships within Kerbin's SOI for example, you might just have one frequency & antenna. For comms outside the SOI you could have one relay sat on a different frequency, linked to the ground station, and relaying only on that frequency to other satellites around other planets. What I'm not clear on; if I assign a geostationary relay satellite around kerbin to frequency say, 50, and relay that to Duna's SOI and then switch to a local frequency (say, 17) using a relay with two antenna, if frequency 17 is only for ships in Duna's SOI, will craft on frequency 17 still have comms to kerbin (via 50) if the relay sats have a connection, but there's strictly no Freq 17 at Kerbin's ground station? Or would I be reliant on local control in Duna SOI on 17? If signals can be combined and split by relays then it'd be useful to have a diplexer or band-pass filter to make such a feature explicit. Kielm Posted January 21, 2021 Share Posted January 21, 2021 This mod is well placed for expansion into a slightly more realistic model of communications networks, which might be well-suited to RemoteTech as well. e.g: Increased antenna diversity to encompass a range of frequencies better suited to represent career progression i.e. (Relatively) low frequency (VHF, UHF), low-bandwidth starting antenna Mid-range, L-S band antenna (around about the Mun/Minmus landing stage) C-X band antennas for the interplanetary exploration stages Ku/Ka (and potentially above) for transmissions across the solar system & beyond Yes - I'm aware that increased frequency doesn't imply increased range but given the implied increase in load/connections this will soon make sense. However, lower frequencies have the issue of having a lower throughput of information (generally speaking). Adding more devices while still using a time-division approach to communications (each device transmits at a certain time) severely limits the number of devices that can connect. Thus: Bandwidth limitations on lower frequencies, limiting the number of direct connections in a low frequency constellation - which would be able to sustain less devices than a higher frequency one, and/or suffer limitations on data transmission rates. A limitation that could be alleviated through research? Thinking of relays as simple 'repeaters' as a simple approach Treating relays as connections in their own right (but taking up a fraction of the bandwidth of a direct connection) would be arguably more realistic Range limited by power & efficiency Frequency has little impact on range of a transmission in a vacuum* - power and the type of antenna (e.g. parabolic, slot, phased array) are more important. Higher power requirements for longer ranges, less so for more efficient / directional antennas Edge cases for certain frequencies - e.g. ~20Ghz, 60Ghz are quickly attenuated in atmospheres, HF/lower VHF skywave communications (although, might be tricky to implement that) CommNet Constellations provides an excellent framework for taking a deeper dive into the communications aspect of KSP, which doesn't generally get much love. Overcoming more realistic limitations could be a fun challenge! *There are caveats to that statement that are probably beyond the scope of this comment. Yes. A craft with relays and multiple frequencies routes connections between subnets, so to speak, back to the KSC. I use it to keep the commnet view somewhat ordered: Kerbin groundstations use frequencies 0 (Public, for tests and one-off tourist orbiters), 2 (InterNet, #FFFF00) and 10 (Kerbin, #00FF00). I usually only populate and upgrade the stations at KSC, Crater Rim and Harvester Massif, with Nye Island and North Station One as possible minor backup sites later in the game, if I have funds to splash. Relays around Mun have antennas for frequencies 10 and 11 (Mun, #77FF77), likewise relays around Minmus use 10 and 12 (Minmus, #AAFFAA). Vessels within Kerbin's SOI usually use 10 as their primary frequency, while rovers, bases and long-term probes and landers use the moon-specific numbers, so they'll only connect through the local relays. Relays on solar orbit have large arrays on channel 2. Relays around other planets use both 2 and another channel (e.g. 20 for Eve, 30 for Duna. I don't have a logical scheme to it. Wherever I go next gets the next range of 10 frequencies each, with vaguely distinct colors). Ships going on interplanetary missions would launch with primary channel 2, then reconfigure to the local SOI frequency once they arrive. I haven't found a need to create more fine-grained channels for moons outside Kerbin, yet, because the number of vessels there is pretty low in my games. I just like to keep the possibility, hence the 10-pack of channels for each planet. I reserved channel 1 (Local, #FFFFFF) for short-range relays on stations and the like, to control things like their local tugs but I haven't really thought it through, I guess. 11 hours ago, Kielm said: If signals can be combined and split by relays then it'd be useful to have a diplexer or band-pass filter to make such a feature explicit. Yeah, a more complex routing policy could maybe spice it up a bit and create isolated networks, so we'd see the walkie-talkie icon more often I'm not sure if that's truly worth the additional configuration complexity and TaxiService's time to work on the mod, though.
