Natural Disasters (Optional)

Recommended Posts

Cant say i approve of "random" disasters that would cause stuff to fail for no reason, same way i do not support the concept of "random" part failures either (scipted part failures as like in the expansion would be interesting, but completely random, no thanks).

That said, what i would like to see are limited weather effects.  Even something as simple as very gently winds to make aircraft takeoffs/landings more difficult or make launches into space require a minor compensation to keep them flying straight in the wind.  Id even like to see stuff like rain/snow which might add a small drag to craft just to keep it interesting, and the somewhat random nature of this would allow you to either launch during bad weather (albeit id make the effect fairly minimal so it doesnt make going somewhere impossible, just somewhat more challenging and or less fuel efficient), or wait for it to pass by.  Ofc on the extreme end things like hurricanes do sound fun on higher difficulties (but not destroying buildings as thats just plain annoying), especially on laythe, it always struck me like something akin to that cloner planet in star wars where there were hurricanes and rain and generally crappy weather.

Nah, does not fit in this kind of game. Natural disaster dont happend that often IRL at the real KSC. But when it does, it survives.

NASA in 2005 begs to differ. Spent most of the year cleaning up Katrina's mess and repairing the VAB.

Thats true, but it wont collapse like it does in KSP, wich is a more expensive repair

If it collapses then it needs to be rebuilt. To repair is to fix the damage. When the parts needing replacement is more than half of the original object, then it becomes a replacement and not a repair.

The NASA VAB was in need of repair as it needed exterior tiles replaced. If the VAB had collaspsed, it would require a replacement.

Other than that possible science boost, I'm not seeing any gameplay advantages here I'm afraid - at least not for the stock game. As @Alshain pointed out, standard response to bad weather is to scrub the launch. Which hardly affects anything because there are no logistics involved in Stock. Launch today, launch tomorrow or launch next week - it makes almost no difference.

The only exception I can think of off the top of my head is if you miss a transfer window and are running that interplanetary mission on a very tight delta-V budget but even then, the worst that happens is that you need to redesign your ship - which happens outside of game time anyway.

If you're running a modded game with say KCT and some kind of life support, then launch delays could become more important. Although even then they sound more like random punishments to me, rather than anything particularly fun. YMMV of course.

Or, you can fulfill contracts to scan with a weather satellite of some sort and earn money that way. Maybe that would add some depth of the game, putting weather satellites in Eve orbits to fulfill contracts would be neat.

I see this being something to deal with on other planets rather than on Kerbin.

Have occasional winds and rainstorms on Kerbin which are not space centre crushing but may force a scrubbed launch or difficult takeoff, and put extreme weather on other worlds. I can see a bit of an Ares 3 scenario playing out to may kerbals on Laythe, or a dust storm on Duna which depletes my rovers of power.

I'm less fond of earthquakes and tsunamis as they are difficult to model and so much rarer than those events.

I support this. I don't want to lose my VAB at any time, but a tricky shuttle landing, sure!   Ares 3 on Duna? YES!!
