My first failed mun landing.

Yeah, that was a bit fast, what you want to do is do a burn to kill your horizontal speed before coming down vertically to land, I prefer to do my de-orbit burn when at a periapsis of 10 to 15km, that way if I mess up I'm on an orbit that wont paste me over half the moon :)

Yup, you where going way to fast when you hit the ground. try to land slower than 10 m/s, the slower the better. exploiting the fuel consumption bug (even accidentally) is sometimes better than crash landing.

Also, try as hard as you can to kill your lateral (sideways) momentum. its much easier to land if you go straight down, rather than sideways. doing so risks tipping over, which usually dooms your chances of return.

Try as best you can to judge how high up you are. I accomplish this by jettisoning the last stage before the lander, and seeing how far away i am from it when it explodes (only works if closer than 2.6 kilometers)

also, if you don't feel that killing your horizontal velocity is what you want, then you could always just use landing gear instead of legs

granted I've never tried this, but it should work.

Try zeroing your horizontal speed higher up, then descending vertically. That way you can concentrate on controlling vertical speed. Different players do this at different altitudes; some people like to stop at 10,000m or more and then descend, though I like to come down to about 3,000m before trying to stop. Or, a good way to zero horizontal speed gradually is to always aim for your retrograde marker as you steer backwards toward the surface. That way you will constantly be slowing vertically and horizontally as long as the engine is running. Don't try to touchdown until the retrograde marker is directly below your ship, because that means you're not moving sideways at all.

Also, it looks like that ship is carrying much more fuel than you need to get home, and the heavier it is, the harder it is to stop. Consider redesigning your lander to make it lighter, and then it will stop faster and be easier to steer. Maybe get used to landing a small 1-man ship before you try the much larger 3-man. It's a nice-looking ship, though. :)

If what happened there happens again, you come in low with too much horizontal velocity, burn hard vertically upward, to give yourself more time to cancel your horizontal velocity. Just keep the ship pointed at the marker with the X on the nav-ball, and keep an eye on the speed. If you get real good, you can even land blind!
