Flattest place on Eve

Recommended Posts

The combination of 'elevated' and 'flat' is pretty rare. About the best I've found is sort of rolling terrain; with some aerodynamic control you might be able to pick the least-worst place. A plane has some advantages there with its massive cross-range ability, and because of its low CoG and wide wheelbase can be stable (when stopped) on much sharper slopes than many vertical-lift Eve landers.

If you can do a sea-level launch from Eve, you can always land in the ocean.  The oceans are perfectly flat.

Uh...

Yes, you could, but a. it sounds like they need an elevated area, b. landing in the ocean proper as opposed to the fringes means you need to be stable in flotation, which is an additional design constraint, and c. you can't ISRU in or near Eve's oceans (they're locked to 0% ore), so you've got to land fully fueled, which makes entry and soft-landing much trickier.

@Zosma Procyon, do you have an updated pic of your latest design? I know it's a WIP, but I'm sure I'm not the only one who'd be interested to see it.

As for flat ground, I pretty much always land on the main continent a bit west of the Great Ocean. Not very specific, I know, but I can put up a screenshot after work if you wanna see what I mean. Depending where exactly you land, it goes from about sea level to around 3km. And flat enough, I think. As long as you space your landing legs or trusses out wide, you should be fine. My second successful mission was a very tall, single fuselage, and it landed without any trouble.

I wasn't talking to you and don't appreciate your tone.  But since you want to jump on my case, as I said,, "IF you can do a sea level launch".  The OP is already thinking he can go from only 1km ASL, which isn't a huge difference (as Eve goes) from sea level.  Certainly less than being constrained to the highest mountaintops.

As I said, "IF you can do a sea level launch".  That "IF" kinda takes all your points into account.  The OP was looking for a flat place.  The ocean is flat.  I just threw it out there as an option to consider.
