Why can’t I assign a new screen capture key?

Recommended Posts

I'm posting here because I am running MechJeb and Kerbal Engineer Redux, but I seriously doubt that they are responsible.

This problem has persisted for a while. My screen capture key is F12 (which same key turns the display of aerodynamic forces on and off). I can’t re-assign it. I can go into the options. I can select new key assignments. I’ve done it many, many times and it always looks like I’ve reassigned the key(s). But no matter what I do, the new key assignments do nothing.

F12 continues to work as screen capture. The newly assigned keys do nothing.

Any ideas? Thanks.

Can you clarify what you mean when you say "screenshots"?  Do you mean KSP screenshots, or do you mean Steam screenshots?

  • By "KSP screenshots", I refer to the screenshots that KSP places in your "Screenshots" folder inside your KSP installation.  By default, this is activated via F1.
  • By "Steam screenshots", I refer to the screenshots that get transmitted to Steam when you take them; they show up in your Steam account, not in your KSP folder.  By default, this is F12 (note that this is a Steam setting, not a KSP setting).

As far as I know, the KSP screenshot key is easily reassignable using settings, as you describe above.  However, if you want to reassign (or disable) the Steam screenshot key, you have to do that in the Steam client, not KSP (because KSP doesn't know anything about it).  In Steam, go to Settings -> In-Game -> Screenshot shortcut keys.  You can reassign to something different from F12, or you can simply remove it altogether if you don't want to transmit screenshots to Steam.

Does this answer your question?

First off, thanks for your reply. I think I may, in fact, have been looking at Steam screenshots without realizing there were two different sets of shots. When I press the buttons assigned in KSP, there's no sign that anything has happened, whereas when I press F12 I get a clear indication that a screen shot has been taken and, upon exiting the games, I was shown screen shots I'd taken which were only the F12 screen shots.

So ... I didn't think that my KSP keys were doing anything.

However, now I've checked and, sure enough, they're working. They're putting screens in a different directory and just not giving me any indication that they're being taken.

So thank you very, very much!

Hi guys, sorry can I piggy-back on this? I run KSP through GOG Galaxy Client (cos I bought it on GOG, not Steam). But F12 still takes screenshots (I want it to just do aero overlay). Is this the same issue just with GOG?

Sounds like it.  You'll probably have to find the setting in Galaxy itself, KSP won't see it.

I also run the GoG version, but I don't use Galaxy, and F12 has nothing to do with screenshots.
