Brand new player staging issues.

Hi all! Finally made the plunge to purchase KSP and konquer space, but am having issues. Even if I arrange my craft into different stages, IE, engine stage 0, parachute stage 1, etc, if I press space, the engine will not activate, and if I manually turn it on, the parachute activates as well. What am I missing?

Could we see a screenshot of the ship on the launchpad, with the staging display visible? It might help diagnose the problem.

Sounds like they are in fact all in one stage. As @Vanamonde said, posting a screenshot would be very helpful.

Greetings and welcome to the forum, @Aelar_Nailo.

The forum itself does not host images so you will need to post your images to a third party provider (I use imgur but there are heaps of others) and copy the link from said provider into a post.  The forum software should recognize it and insert the image.

Sounds like you have the stages in the reverse order. In your case, stage 1 is the first to fire. That would be the parachute, not the engine like you intended. Then comes stage 0, which would be your engine.

Staging works from bottom to top. So the bottom stage (the highest numbered stage) is the one that is currently active/will be activated next.
