One of the things I love most about KSP is being able to try really outside the box ideas.

After some thought... If you have a level 3 or higher Kerbal... You don't even need the parachute, right? Just use the Kerbal's chute.

No reason the Kerbal couldn't Get Out And Push.  If it works for a Mk. 1-3 Command Pod, it should work for that minimal craft...

How does he get to orbit- what sort of launch vehicle?

I built a cheap replica of a Redstone -- three FL-T800 tanks, a Reliant, four fins with control surfaces -- and it had plenty of dV to get a Mk. 1 Command Pod into orbit (helps that Kerbin's orbital velocity is about 1/3 of Earth's).  Given how much lighter that command-seat-in-a-cage ought to be than a Mk. 1, you might be able to do it with just two tanks and no fins, providing that deathtrap has a reaction wheel.  That's a pretty cheap orbital launcher...
