There is also a headlamp in the KSPBigTrak collection.

Does anyone else find that lights, even when off, can introduce a load of lag?

The 'o' key. It also says that is has to be in the active stage.

'o' as Tommy521 says, and also 'p'. I think its 'o' for nav and 'p' for strobe/beacon. Its in the docs, just above teh download link.
