Wasnt the ISS (US portion, at least) supposedly named “Space Station Freedom “ ?

At one time.

There was also "Alpha".

Then the Russians got involved, and it became "Ralph".

AFAIK https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space_Station_Freedom merged with a Soviet/Russian design for a Mir-2 to form the ISS.

Yes.  After the name "Freedom" was dropped, it was referred to (at least internally) as "Alpha"1.  Then, it became "Russian Alpha", or "Ralph" for some internal discussions, before "International Space Station" was settled on.

1It's not directly listed on the page, but there is a section: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space_Station_Freedom#Freedom_(1988)_to_Alpha_(1993)
