Grand Slam Passive Seismometer

The Grand Slam Passive Seismometer is worthless.  Just make it detect normal seismic activity on the planet instead of making it based on crashing vehicles into a planet to make it useful.

It's mainly for role play. I hope you are aware that in real life, Apollo actually ran this experiment by deliberately crashing the later Saturn 3rd stages into the moon to provide signal for instruments left from previous missions.

I like how it function on Minmus. The size of craft needed for the Mun, however, is annoying.

Could you recommend for me and future readers of the thread where to go to learn in more detail what you are talking about when you refer to the needed craft size? I am failing to get any science from crashing impactor vessels very close to the Seismometer, even with all power, control, and connectivity requirements satisfied. I have been having a very hard time figuring out whether the speed of my impacts is at fault, or if it is the size of the crafts at fault.

If it isn't thoroughly explained anywhere else, could you explain it here?

I completed the deployed seismometer experiments for Mun and Minmus extremely cheaply by bolting a small probe onto other missions (OKTO, Oscar-b, spark) then launching it like a missile just after entering Mun/Minmus SOI. You can also drop transfer stages on collision courses and get some extra utility out of them for free.

Are you sure it’s switched on and hasn’t already completed 100%?

True, although the Apollo experiments ALSO collected seismic data over time.

IMHO this would have been better to collect science slowly over time, like the other experiments, but give some bonus science (possibly only via missions?) if you deliberately crash something. Kinda like the Impact! mod..

One issue is that it seems you will almost always get nothing when impacting with full physics. I.e. when the impactor is the active vessel. Do it on-rails, and you will get x1000 more. Maybe this is avoided often for very large speeds, but I've ran into this constantly.  At least makes doing this at Eve "interesting". Probably the hardest straightforward science (or career contract) to do in the stock game imo.

But for mun/minmus, make sure you are not watching the impact (too close). It's usually sufficient to switch to the Experiment Control Unit on the ground, since full physics is only a few hundrer meter range.
