Ares-I question...

I just want to confirm that Ares-I is not suppose to allow an Orion to enter Lunar Orbit by itself, right? My understanding is that for TLI, Orion is ALWAYS paired with a EDS, even if a backup orion is launcher.

Ares-I has not been a thing for a long, long time, that was part of the Constellation Program, pre-Obama.

Ares-I was to take a (smaller mass, it grew) Orion only to LEO.

Well, I can't ask this question in the Gameplay tutorial forum...

As it turns out, while the S2-33 is good for shuttle launch, using it for Ares-I clone is OP -- I can easily send it to Mun.

Ah, yeah, a lot of stuff is not really balanced for the Kerbin-Mun system vs Earth-Moon.

There is never any reason to do multi-stage landers for the Mun, for example. I suppose for a game related question/idea I might consider using a rescale mod. I often play KSP with everything scaled up 3.2X, and distances to 6.4X, for example. You can still fly stock vehicles, but the stacks all start looking more realistic.

I drop stages at Mun a lot. Especially early in my career playthroughs. I don't NEED to, usually, but it does help minimize launch weight and cost.

Yeah, and I do it because, well, it's normal on the real Moon.

On rescales with stock parts, you can actually start really wanting to, though, which is fun. KSP honestly player perfectly well just at 3.2 or 4X scale and everything else stock.

I get that it's a game and intended to be fun rather than a simulator. But KSP makes me hungry for something like KSP but at real scale. I've tried playing Real Solar System, and it's pretty amazing, but you have to have SO MANY mods to try to fix all the stuff in stock KSP that is balanced for the stock solar system.... I finally gave up because it was just too much trouble to manage all the mods needed for RSS.

Simpler is to get the rescale mods, and just play. Sigma Dimensions, and set the planets to 3-4X, and the distances to 4-6.4X and it works really well. You can add that one mod to crank up time warp, too. 6.4X with stock parts I have done, but its harder.

Stock KSP results in stumpy rockets if they are just big enough, but 3.2X? 3.2X makes you build reasonable rockets.

Late to the party, but yeah, Ares I was intended to toss Orion into LEO to rendezvous with Altair and its EDS launched on Ares V. That's one of the reasons they never bothered to give Orion meaningful props, which is why we are stuck with LOP-G, since Orion has insufficient capacity to enter LLO from TLI and return.
