Rescue mission on Minmus

Recommended Posts

I'm not sure if this part of the forum is appropriate for this question.

I was playing a mission to ferry some tourist around Minmus and while in orbit I decided to do an EVA. I let got the ship and my kerbal fly away :S.
Is it possible to do a crew transfer between ships, if I put them near enough?
Or I need to do an EVA to get a pilot to jump from one ship to the other?
Or I should cancel the mission get the reputation reduction and train new crew?

Thanks

Moved to Gameplay Questions.

What happened to the kerbal that flew away?  Are you able to get them back to the ship?

If they can't get back to the ship, I would send a ship to rescue them.  Your best bet for the stranded tourist would probably be to get a new pilot to that ship (or bring the original one back to it), as tourists cannot go on EVA.

If the tourist ship has a docking port, then you could dock to it and transfer them about that way if needed.  But I'm assuming it doesn't have one.

Another option would be to use the Advanced Grabbing Unit, if you have it unlocked.  You can transfer kerbals through that (despite it being hilariously unrealistic!)

What exactly happened? The Kerbal (your pilot I presume) lost it's hold on the ship - either because you pressed <SPACE> while on EVA or you moved away from the hand-holds on the ship - and the the ship and Kerbal drifted apart from each other? Are they still fairly close to each other or is the Kerbal far away from the ship?

Are you aware that the Kerbals on EVA have a jetpack and can use that to get back to the ship? Do you have experience controlling an Kerbal on EVA with their jetpack?

You can't EVA tourists, so I'm going to assume you had a pilot on that ship who went EVA and presumably let go. Are they floating beside the ship or did they end up stopping dead and then dropping towards the surface? The second option can happen if you're accelerating at the time you do the EVA and is a little bit harder to recover from.

Press the RCS key (usually R) and your Kerbal will activate their EVA jetpack. They can then fly around with it and get back to their ship- the pack has a lot of fuel and Minmus has low orbital velocities so it's actually not that difficult to get back to the ship, board and fly back to Kerbin.

If you dock two ships together, using docking ports, then you can transfer crew between them with a few mouse clicks-- no EVA is required at all.

If you're not docked together, then yeah, going EVA is basically the only way.  Kerbals have EVA thrusters that work like RCS, which let them control their flight and fly around.  You can toggle it on by pressing the R key, then you can use (by default) W, A, S, D, shift, and ctrl to thrust forward, backward, left, right, up, and down, respectively.  Be aware it takes some practice, though-- the EVA thrusters are pretty powerful and you should only use very light taps on the keys to fly around pretty slowly, at least until you've had a chance to practice.
