It can be absolutely great for contracts! I use it all the time. For example my research plane to laythe got a lot of extract ore contracts, so i used the ore tanks on board to gather the ore, then remove the excess.

By what arcane, stygian logic, do the WASDQE keys operate in the VAB when rotating a part?

Ive got somewhere near 2000hours in KSP but I still, almost every time, have to quickly trial-and-error the keys until it turns the right way.

It seems like it works differently for every part, or maybe it's just that the game thinks each part is in a different orientation.

Ever since the new enhanced edition update dropped back in december, there was an option to make the parts "same vessel interact" when you bring up the little part menu option thingy (forgot what is called). When I enable it on a part, it doesn't do anything. WHAT DOES IT DO?!?

Normally parts on the same vessel don't interact with each other - like a hinged part can be rotated through the rest of the vessel without interacting. By selecting that on, the hinged part would hit the other part of the vessel and stop.  Another example would be gears - previously, they had to be decoupled to interact with each other.  Now you can have gears that drive other gears on the same vessel.  Somebody posted a video last week IIRC showing a 5 speed plus reverse transmission he made that drove a prop that was pretty impressive
