How do I suppose to know when to takeoff

Recommended Posts

Last time, I guess I've played 5years a go, so I can't remember much...

For sure I was using a website to help me to figure out when to takeoff from Kerbin to reach Mun and Minmus but sadly it won't work anymore and I can't really understand when to start to orbit around Minmus.

Please note that I really dislike mods with tons of infos and autopilot, I would like to play Vanilla as possible

Any kind of advice are very very welcome.

Thanks you all, it's nice to explode in the space again :D

I had to figure this all out again when I came back - so I feel Yer pain.

As for the Mun and Minmus I don't think you really need to time it - with a 75-90k orbit you can get to either moon by putting your maneuver nodes in the right spot.

Just plop down a node - pull the prograde marker till apoapsis is close to the orbit of your target and then drag the whole node around until you get a good perapsis (and then refine it).

As for the other planets there is a few tutorials out there that can be found

Problem is that at the moment in my career I didn't have maneuver node

For the Mun, aim about 60 to 90 degrees ahead of the Mun in its orbit.

For Minmus, aim 45 to 60 degrees ahead.

Then put your Ap just a few hundred km above the orbit of the CB. Once you get out there, the CB will be fairly close and will be catching up to you, and you will spend a long time out near your Ap. You may need to make a tiny adjustment or two in order to guarantee an intercept.

Minmus takes some sharp-shootin' aim to hit, if you don't have maneuver nodes-- if you're a bit rusty, you might want to wait until you do.

Going to the Mun, however, is quite a bit easier; it's a much bigger target, and is considerably closer.  Basically, what you do is:

  1. Get into a low circular orbit around Kerbin
  2. Wait until right at the moment when you see the Mun rise above the horizon in front of you
  3. Switch to map view and thrust :prograde: until you see your Ap rise to around the Mun's altitude

That's pretty much it.  Your aim will likely not be perfect, so you'll need to keep an eye on the map view so that you can make the necessary corrections as soon as you enter the Mun's SoI, but that's the gist of it.

Good luck!  :)
