Oh it is a big deal. Just not as big as it could be because these are trained professional adult women. And the fact that women are few and most cut or tie their hair back.

But imagine a few hundred of these LOL.

"Houston? We got a BIG problem. Somebody is gonna pay for this, you hear me?!"

I assure you the ladies do the big hair mainly for photos, as I really doubt the other astronauts are OK with hair swishing around during regular work hours.

they are probably just a part of your usual hygene procedures. you also have the problem of astronauts simply growing out their hair in space for long duration stays, im pretty sure they have a means for handling that stuff. how else does scott kelly keep his cueball. vacuum clippers?

From what I’ve read - yes! Although the Apollo astronauts apparently just used a safety razor.

Personal hygiene and grooming in this scenario shouldn’t be too much of a problem though because it can take place in normal gravity.

As you pointed out, many sports either require gravity or would be cumbersome in zero-G, like track running.

So, if you don’t mind me changing the question a bit, I would go for activities - and not necessarily sports - that either only work in zero-G, or can take advantage of zero-G in some way. After all you can go running anywhere (including this liner when it’s under thrust) but you can’t get easily get that zero-G experience anywhere  but space - not for more than a few minutes at a time anyway.

So what does zero-G give you as an experience? My immediate thoughts are: that floating in midair feeling, the challenge of manoeuvring in three dimensions and the challenge of aiming something at a person moving in three dimensions. You can probably come up with more.

So what kind of activities would take advantage of those experiences? I have some ideas, again you’ll probably have more.

1. The Tube.

Basically a long enclosed space for one passenger at a time to float along. Either transparent so you can see outside or using VR to simulate a view outside. Either way the idea is that you start yourself moving and then just keep going... and going... and going, till you get to the other end.

2. Climbing walls

You could have some pretty funky climbing experiences in zero-G, including crawling along the ceiling Spider-Man style. And if you overreach and fall off the wall, or just need to take a break and hang for a bit - well that’s not a problem in zero-G.

3. Obstacle courses.

A variation on The Tube but with padded obstacles in the way to manoeuvre around. Challenge yourself or compete against other passengers to post the quickest times through the course.

4. Dodgeball.

In a padded room played with a lightweight sponge ball and appropriate PPE, I actually think zero-G dodgeball would be a lot of fun.

LaserTag.

Basically the Battle Room from Ender’s Game (the book - no idea how it worked in the film). Like LaserTag, or LaserQuest on Earth but in 3D and free fall. Just remember - the other team’s gate is down.

I could add flight via flapping wings in a torus room, so you could just keep flying in a broad circle.

Actually even soccer could work, just in a flat circular room with adhesive shoes and a lot of PPE.

There won't be any fancy foot work, but there will be a LOT of rebounds off bodies and the circular side walls and the floor and ceiling.

maybe some kind of sport using a sort of indoor mmu using either compressed air jets or high performance fans as thrusters.  i imagine some kind of racing or capture the flag kind of thing being possible.

Racing and powered flight indoors sounds risky.

I would rather do that in space.

I learned from playing newtonian games that playing 3-D soccer with spaceships is quite viable so long they can bump into each other.

If I did it I would net off the entire course and put it in geostationary orbit anchored to... the moon with tethers, that way the course won't drift off nor will it crash into the moon, as I would always know where it is and have drones to adjust it's position as the need arises.

it would depend on the hull thickness thats for sure. like the middle of an oneil cylinder it would be pretty safe as you would need to smash through several layers of hull to get to vacuum. a ship with a hull like what you had on the lm, nope.  i figure the racing would be where there are a lot of turns and you never have much chance to accelerate to dangerous levels. you are also subject to aerodynamic drag and possibly subject to computerized safety lockouts as well. and you can balance the pack performance such that it can get you up to a sprinting pace and not much else.

First of all: latex, harness & discipline.

Latex suits to keep their clothes away from fans and doors, and to let them fit the room more efficiently.
Also smooth surfaces are easier to clean.

Harness over the latex suit - to quickly attach them to the closest wall or seat, wherever they are.

A collar with life support sensors.
Bracelets to attach the body to the safety belts system.

Discipline - to keep order in the diner and the bathrooms.

***

The room walls covered with some kind of rubber.

Metal forks and protective glasses (spectacles).
Forks (two of them per everyone) - to eat and to climb along the walls in zero-g.
Glasses - to keep the eyes safe.

***

Heavy magnetic boots are a good idea. One kick - and the hull is pierced. Or a skull.
So, no magnetic boots but some boots with leather soles and velcro on top.

***

Big soft cushions. A lot of them. Like in Mideast fairy tales.
To soften the hits, to play with them like with balls. The more cushions you have - the more likely everyone lands on a cushion rather than on metal floor, if something happens.

Similar carpets on walls. Not hairy, but smooth, to wash them more easily.

Weaponized forks and spoons? Come on - how often do you hear about passengers on cruise liners, or airliners for that matter, running amok with the cutlery?

Agreed. Rapiers are better. Players jump along the axial well and try to defeat each other on fly-by.

***

Snail Slug races. Ideal for both zero-g and gravity.

(Snails have shells. Why carry excessive mass, decreasing the delta-V?)

I’d be much more worried about the captain doing something with his torch drive

No torches or matches onboard. See Hindenburg.

***

Paddle ball.

Spoiler

UncomfortableAngryLabradorretriever-smal

Also, paddle baseball (baseball bat with attached ball) and paddle hockey.

***

Drinks.
Sometimes it's enough.

Also it's a backup fuel.

but what about female hair?

Just having them ride in the back seat of my car leaves long strings of hair behind.

Now imagine how much a THOUSAND people will create!

In zero-g they collect on fans, so it's easier.

Also start a competition. Who brings a hair, gets a star. 100 stars - a drink for free.

Guys have long hair too you know. You're reading a post by a long-haired guy right now in fact.

No problems. SW-style headware for both.

Needs no gravity, but still works in it.

A good idea. A safety razor throwing competition. Can't damage the hull, but still funny.
Gravity doesn't affect, pure aerodynamics.

***

Spinners.

Team A rotates clockwise, Team B counterclockwise.
Make the whole ship rotate in your direction.
