Lost in space!

Recommended Posts

I have a few Kerbals trapped on a space station in low Kerbal orbit. My guess is that it’s a mod conflict. I get bored with the stock game, so I modded my game to make it more exciting.

Anyway, I digress, this is just small science station with two main parts, a command pod and MPL.  First thing I noticed is that electric charge readout went to NaN.  Then I went up to get one of the kerbals off the command pod and when I used right click to see the screen for the command pod, it came up, but none of the buttons worked. I couldn’t select anyone’s inventory or transfer crew.
In the spirit of KSP, I came up with plan B, EVA. I got a Kerbal on EVA, but the second I let go of the command pod and started floating I notice while I could engage my RCS thrusters, I could see them puffing away on the screen, it had no effect on my direction of travel.  I just kept floating away. I could make her spin, but that was it.  I tried this several times, once I noticed my command pod shaking in the game as I went flying at Mach 9 away the second I stepped out.

I went back to a save and tried to de orbit my ship, I made plans for this, but I noticed that the ships controlls were not working well.  Then, I found out, like my Kerbal, I can change my ships orientation, but when I blast my engines full tilt, it has no effect on my orbit.

This kind of ruins the game for me.  Kerbins are expensive and hard to replace. Plus I don’t like killing them. I’ve lost a number of games due to technical issues. I’m tired of reloading and starting from the beginning.

I’ve seen some stuff about this, but I didn’t understand it.

Any ideas?

It’s pretty long. According to ckan - ok wow  long list.  Near future stuff.  Restock.  Trajectories.  Click through blocker.  Toolbar controller.  Science continued.  KIS.  KAS.  TALCS.  Kerbal Alarm Clock.  Base systems.  SCANsat.  MechJeb.  Docking alignment.  ComNet stuff.  Background Resources. Ok the list is crazy.  I let ckan in stall stuff that was recommended.  Anyway to automate this?

"NaN" bugs are tricky as they can sneak in unnoticed and grow and infect unrelated parts until suddenly a craft explodes or things go weird.

I'd start by looking at the persistent.sfs file and search for "NaN" and try to determine which mod might be handling the affected parts or modules. A log file might be useful to look at, too, although newly introduced "NaN" values don't necessarily show up there.

I’m kind of torn.  I’m not interested in being a programmer. I kind of just want to play the game. In a way I have violated that by adding mods, but the stock game just becomes boring pretty quickly.  I do like the idea of the game...but maybe it isn’t for me.  I just want stuff to work.

If you upload a save game and the KSP.log from the KSP directoy somewhere (dropbox or even just pastebin if it's not too long), we could have a look at it. No promises ;)

The log contains the mod list. There's no need to export that.

@Torchster Copy and then open the persistent.sfs file inside KSP/saves/your-save-name-here (the name of your save!) and do a global search for NaN using Ctrl+F (or CMD+F for Mac), then replace each one with the number 1 to assign it a value. Then try loading that into KSP and see if it has resolved the issue.

Wow. I opened up the persistent.sfs file. There were NaN values everywhere. I’m no programmer, but I could see it setting the values for ship in question, and it assigning values for electric charge to my ship as NaN. This I can see in game.

is this SQL?

Then I start to NaN in way too many places.  In my MechJebModuleFlightRecorder for values  DeltaVExpended and steeringLosses.  Actually I see it like 5 times over and over again.  Exact same thing.  I think I should only have one ship “infected”, so I’m not sure why it appears so many times related to MechJeb. I also see it as a value to an older ship I don’t use, an old lander sitting on the mun. SMA...whatever that means.  Then back to the previous MEchJeb stuff. Can’t figure out exactly which vessels.   Also, I see associates with various parts of ships, like life support pieces.

In short, a lot of places

my guess is that this save file is dead.  No point in playing it anymore  it’s only going to get worse.

Do you have any old quicksaves from before you added the mods or before everything got messed up? They can be found in the same folder as persistent.sfs. There also might be a backups folder in the same location although that may be a mod feature. If you find them, copy them to someplace safe (along with persistent.sfs), try uninstalling the mods, and then choose one of the quicksaves (one without the nans) and rename it to persistent.sfs. Launch the game and see if it works.

Take a screenshot (or multiple if your list is too long for one) of whats in your gamedata folder, upload it to an image hosting service like imgur, and post it here.
