KER Not Displaying

I have KER installed, but when I am playing I am not seeing any information from it anywhere on my screen.  I have to get true altitude and vertical speed from MechJeb, and the KER button on the toolbar is black and not able to be pressed.  Is there a setting somewhere that I am missing that enables this button?

The default KER settings require adding a computer-like component to every craft.  That's "career" mode. You might prefer "partless" mode.

To get to KER settings, go to VAB, start a vessel with at least 1 control part, click the KER wrench button to display the KER window, click settings in that window. "Flight Engineer activation mode" is 5th setting from the top in my version.
