Challenge: Create a rocket and knock an asteroid off course.

Recommended Posts

The challenge is simple, fire a rocket from kerbin and use it to knock an asteroid off course by colliding with it.

One point for hitting the asteroid and changing its orbit in a noticeable and significant way.

2 points if you can change its orbit enough to enter another bodies sphere of influence or enough to make it intercept another body.

3 points if you use another ship to launch your rocket.

4 points if you use a ship or vessel attached to another asteroid to launch your rocket.

5 points if the asteroid was on a collision course with kerbin.

10 points if you hit a smallest class A size asteroid and your relative velocity is above orbital speed.

100 points if you are able to destroy the meteor.

1000 pts if you are able to hit an asteroid or comet hard enough to put it on an escape velocity away from kerbol.

To be honest, I think there are several aspects of the challenge that could be altered. First of all, I think there should be some achievement for hitting a massive object (1 point for a C, 2 for D, 3 for E). Also, Kerbol's SOI is infinite, so you cannot hurl even a Class A asteroid out of the solar system. So instead, I'd suggest that you put some sort of semi-major axis minimum.

Ok but you can put it on an escape trajectory. Infinite SOI doesn't mean infinite escape velocity.
