How do I tell what version of a mod is in use?

Is there a simple way to tell what version of a mod is in my KSP Gamedata folder?

Otherwise, I have to copy from  the download zip file (which shows the version) to ensure which one is in play.

if present, you can check the .version file.

Or you could use CKAN (which looks for versions, dependencies, incompatibilities, ... )
