FTS systems

Recommended Posts

So, when I build new launch vehicles for like 1 mission, they’re unreliable a lot of the time, flipping out of control, having side boosters crash into the main core, or the (already starved) kraken gets hungry. And I don’t like the idea of debri just raining down in the ocean or coming back to the KSC. This even happened with one of my reusable rockets, crashing down very close to the runway when I messed up the CoL. So if there was a way to blow them up if something goes wrong, I wouldn’t mind it.

Not sure what FTS means but I think you mean range safety, which is used on (most) real rockets to prevent hundreds of tons of highly flammable and in some cases toxic materials from crashing down at high speed onto delicate launch pads, people, buildings etc.

Unless you’re really interested in bring as ‘realistic’ as possible and/or are playing with no reverts, just revert to launch/VAB if it all goes horribly wrong or use a mod like KRASH to simulate your rockets before you fly them and find any glaring design flaws without the weather forecast becoming “cloudy with a chance of heavy rocket part rain later in the day”.

FTS - Flight Termination System .. all I know of is mapping action groups to the abort button at the top of the screen, like activating parachutes, ejection systems, etc. but in my ksp experience I don't know of anyway to blow them up.

As far as I know, once a piece of the craft breaks off, any mapped action will not execute anyways.

It’s not that I don’t want to play modded, but i’m on console.

Sorry, didn't realize.

I don't have access to the console version of KSP, but I just tested this on PC and it works in stock. Hopefully it will also work on console. Turn off the setting that allows you to revert flights. Then if a launch goes sideways switch to the Tracking Station. Say yes to the warning about abandoning the flight. Then you can terminate any debris from there. If you have Kerbals aboard you can switch back to them and land that section. If it is an unmanned rocket you could just terminate everything.

If you have the revert flight setting on, then switching to the Tracking Station will auto-revert to launch.
