Scifi Aliens Are Not Necessary. .....But They Should Always Be Entertaining

why do aliens need to be aliens? unless they are something completely different (say the aliens from arrival or the xenomorph from the alien franchise), they are ultimately just humans with different heads. this is fine if you are using science fiction as a vehicle to explore human behavior (star trek, b5, etc), but its boring otherwise (alien of the week).

what if we take humans, put them on centuries long one shot generation ship colonization missions to other solar systems, do that for some time. then fastforward the clock a few hundreds of thousands of years. then one of those colonies develops ftl and transmits the plans to all known human colonies. they set up an interstellar family reunion and find out that they are vastly different than the human stock they were derived from. from a myriad of means, from natural selection, to selective breeding to blatant genetic engineering. this still gives you head aliens and the exploration of the potential of human evolution.

Explore human behavior?

Only in the what-if scenarios scifi brings about.

Futuristic scifi tech is part of that, but it's only a means to an end as far as story telling goes.

Take out all the tech of DS9 and it can be whittled down to a conflict of normal people vs the unknown and later an egomaniac AKA as Dukat.
