Performance Leaves Much to be Desired

Recommended Posts

My PC specs are:

CPU:  Ryzen 9 2700 8-core 3.2 GHz

RAM: 32 gb

GPU: Nvidia RTX 3060 12gb VRAM

PSU: 600w

I consider myself to have a generally good computer, especially with my new graphics card. That being said, the performance of KSP has been getting on my nerves. I would really like to take advantage of the mod Galaxies Unbound but sadly that entails pretty large, part-heavy ships. These ships generally seem to be causing a lot of lag, despite my system specs. I know KSP does an aweful job at actually processing, seeing as it's a 12-year-old game I kind of expect that.

The other thing to note is I see people all the time using loads of mods, building huge ships with giant part counts, and they seem to be getting fine FPS

Without looking at your player log and your option settings it's hard to say what might be causing lag. You are correct the game is not optimized for the GPU so it is CPU intensive. One of the things you can do is turn off orbital debris that will cut down some of the clutter I don't know if that's the case for you but it's a possibility.

Like you, I have a pretty decent rig ryzen 7 3800x 32 gb ram and an Nvidia 2080 super with 8 GB ram.

I I also have to balance what mods I have installed and the size of my vessels in order to insure a decent gaming experience.

Hope that helps a little.

@FundatiCan you narrow down where it's slow?

Slow everywhere, even at beginning of a new playthrough:

  • Reduce the number of mods. For example, you have BDB, Tantares, and Knes all in the same playthrough. Any one of those mods by itself has enough parts to run an entire space program.
  • Decrease graphic settings and/or reduce the number of visual mods you have.

If a new playthrough is fast, then gradually slows down:

  • Save files get bloated over time. Delete unneeded ships using the tracking station, or reduce the amount of debris kept in game (default setting is 250).
  • Sometimes quitting and restarting KSP will improve performance after playing for many hours, especially with older KSP versions.

Landing planes as you approach the runway:

  • The game slows as you have more crew spaces in a craft, especially when the craft is near the ground. Avoid passenger jets with dozens of seats.
  • If it happens even with modest planes that only have a few seats, reduce the graphics load by decreasing ground scatter settings.

So this is more close to the lag I'm getting. My FPS hovers around 30-20 in orbit, ascent from kerbin, whatever. When landing on other planets, however, I get really bad rates around 20-10 fps. I'm actually considering that it might be Parallax.

Edit:

adding to this, I seem to have fine rates on non-atmospheric bodies. Something about parallax and scatterer seems to be causing a lot of lag
