unlikethem
KSP was being developed before Space X successfully landed their first stage for the first time, so the game doesn't support this mechanic. There are mods that achieve that with some crazy hacks like save editing and stuff. But this KSP-2 game is being developed now, when first stage landings becoming (hopefully) a mainstream way of rocket launches. And yet I don't think I've seen a confirmation that this will be supported in an unmodded game. Am I wrong?
BowlerHatGuy3
There does seem to be some kind of scripting icon in the VAB. Vl3d also found out that one of the devs for Kerbal 2 had worked on a scratch like program before. Maybe you will be able to do it with scripting? I doubt there’s going to be a stock mechjeb or anything.
Pthigrivi
There are several solutions to this but yes I hope stage recovery is a valid mechanic in the game. 8 hours ago, BowlerHatGuy2 said: There does seem to be some kind of scripting icon in the VAB. On this Reddit post here: Reddit Post In the bottom right corner you can see an icon that has a clock and a couple of rectangles. It can be a lot of things, but the icon could represent scratch like code.

Perhaps its ur undo history. :
Pthigrivi
^That be interesting. I thought it was probably the alarm clock.
stephensmat
Reusability would make sense. Remember that they're talking about 'routine' flights running on auto, so that you always look forward. But it would be an unlockable. SpaceX made it's mark in the years since development on KSP2 started. Reusability in Space beyond the shuttle program is entirely the product of the last five or ten years.
Guest
I would love to have a system to "qualify" reusable stages for auto-landing, something that requires you to perform a series of hops and jumps not unlike SpaceX's ones.
pandaman
In practical gameplay terms the current KSP1 'recovery' system is the same as actual re-use anyway... ... Land it close, launch again at minimal cost. It's only the 'refund' dialogue that hints at it not being the same physical vessel that launches again. I do agree though that rather than 'refund' there could possibly be a 'recovery charge' relative to the distance and a 'refurbish' charge for replacing the broken bits. But it would need a reference to what you want it refurbished to to work that out. Whereas the current system can just be assumed to do that if you want, as it credits you for the surviving bits, not charges for the missing bits. The reason I especially like this is it could somewhat seamlessly dovetail into repeatable supply runs. You run a qualifying mission with a particular vessel configuration and then apply it in the future when conditions are met (scheduled deliveries with similar dV).
