How to keep parachutes deployed whilst landed?

Recommended Posts

I was recently testing out landing spent stages for my rockets and I keep on coming across that parachutes tend to snap after touchdown which is bad for tall boosters that I might want to recover in one piece for say in a career mode save. Is there any way that I can stop this from happening and increase booster survival from a watery or land grave? Thanks in advance. :)

What do you mean by "snap"? The parachutes will despawn after the craft touches down, but an engineer Kerbal can restore them. I don't know of a situation in which they might damage the craft.

Yeah, I meant despawn. Is there a way for them to not do that? And I mean when the parachutes despawn after touchdown and the booster crashes because tipping over.

Parachutes will auto-cut if you’re on the ground and moving at less than 0.5m/s I believe, so your options are a) land at an angle so you never slow down that much until the booster is lying flat on the ground, b) beef up your landing legs and/or shift the centre of mass down so it doesn’t tip over, c) use a mod that overrides parachutes e.g. RealChute, or d) stick some powerful RCS thrusters on the top to force it to not fall over.
