How to recover ship file from an existing ship

Recommended Posts

The ship will exist somewhere in the very long persistent.sts file I believe and it should be possible to copy that over to a new .craft file.

I remember there being a mod that will allow you to do so without doing it manually (though, I do not know if it works), but I have not been able to find it yet.

Edit: try this mod https://spacedock.info/mod/644/Ship Save Splicer

I;m still kind of new to mods, I think I successfully copied the file but after I transferred the file into saved ship file and restarted the game it didn't show my ship file, maybe because the mod is not fitting my game version? I'm not too sure

To recover a ship with this mod, you need to select it in the map menu and then there should be a button on the bottom or side that says "SSS". Clicking it will automatically add it to your folder of saved crafts.

Ensure that the mod folder is placed in the gamedata folder.

No, it's the ship I saved with the mod that doesn't show the .craft, does that mean after I rename the file with .craft it'll read?

Sorry, I misunderstood the question.

.craft files are for saving ships as a collection of parts that you could put together in the VAB. These are saved in the Ships folder.

ShipSaveSplicer saves ships that have already been launched, as a craft in a particular location on or above a celestial body. These represent actual instances of ships, not ship blueprints, and so would not show up in the VAB. When you load a ship from a ShipSaveSplicer generated file, it should appear in the physical location that it was previously.

Launched ships and ship blueprints are stored in somewhat different formats, so I doubt converting one to the other would be as simple as renaming the file to .craft.

Oh okok, so there is no mod that allow me to save blue print yet correct?

Saving the ship blueprint from the VAB doesn't require any mods: the craft files can be found in /Ships/VAB or /saves/[save name]/Ships/VAB.

However, recreating the blueprint from a ship already in flight is an unusual thing to need to do, and could be tricky to implement, so I don't think there are any mods that do that. I certainly don't know of any. I do think that this feature would be nice to have, though, so asking about it in Add-On Discussions might prompt someone to make a mod for it!

("Blueprint" is not the official name for the craft designs found in the VAB; I just made it up today to clarify what I was talking about.)
