How to make KSP Run Faster

Recommended Posts

I have a rubbish mac mini mid 2011 with

Intel i5, 2.5 ghz, 2 core,

and for graphics,

AMD Radeon HD 6630M, 256 MB,

And ram

8 GB 1333mhz ddr3 ram.

ksp runs pretty badly but if on low settings i can run it and i was wondering if i could get it to run on nicer looking graphics without killing the FPS

I think Lisias made a thread about something like that, but I can't remember the name.

I think you are talking about this thread but I'm not sure it's exactly related. It is for load times, not for in-game performance as far as I can tell

These are the settings I used to get KSP1 to run slightly better on my machine (which is much newer, so your mileage may vary):
Turn off the antialiasing, set the FPS limiter as high as it can go, and turn off fullscreen. You could also set the resolution lower.

The settings might do nothing for you. I think your GPU is just too old, not much you can do to get around that.

With regard to that, there was also a more recent thread where someone found that capping the framerate led to longer load times, since the game loads at the frequency of the framerate instead of however fast the CPU can work. I always had my game framerates capped to my monitor's refresh rate via my GPU's configuration utility, and after uncapping it for KSP, loading times (both initial game load and transitions between VAB/tracking station/vessels/etc.) seem to have been reduced by about 20%.

Install Module Manager. Even if no mods are installed.

It tricks the system by serving infinite FPS on loading, and then restoring the cap before launching the Main Menu.

This one is also pretty pertinent:

I only fire up KSP with this MONO_THREADS_PER_CPU=1 .

You will need a beefier GPU card, there's no other way. I would recommendation one with at least 1GB, as even 512MB is terribly restrictive.

You may want to use an older KSP version instead? KSP 1.3.1 should run pretty well in your rig, KSP 1.4.3 perhaps...

This thread is quite old. Please consider starting a new thread rather than reviving this one.
