Does Reinstalling help?

Recommended Posts

My current game breaking bug is that I can't seem to target another craft in-flight. I've already made a report, but now I'm waiting for an update.

Thing is, I seem to be alone in this. I haven't seen many other people having the same problem, so it might be me...

If it is just me, could deleting and reinstalling the game help get past this problem? I've never really done that before.

It's not my favorite thing, but it works if you are looking for a clean slate.

I used to go through a lengthy process for troubleshooting; revert- restart- new campaign- New install

Now I just work from a campaign that I saved on Day Zero before doing anything else. I try to keep my missions limited to single launch, single vessel (staying within physics bubble) for now until the next update. And I keep my craft files on my desktop next to shortcut to the game folder.

Worth it.

I agree totally worth it.

I've been adhering to this strategy since the game launched.  I've never had to completely reinstall the game from scratch, but I've had to start fresh campaigns multiple times.  Save files often capture the problematic state that the simulation gets into, so I don't really maintain any saves.  Definitely no long running save games at this point.

Starting a fresh campaign was the first thing I did after each patch released.  I would copy old saved crafts from previous patch versions, but I always looked at them suspiciously.  Safer to rebuild from scratch.

The thing to keep in mind is that any of those old saves were generated by older buggier versions of the game.

Steam saved my game, so I picked up right where I left off

I may have failed to impress that I only work from a clean save. I don't ever pick up a save after a launch.

I couldn't have said it better. Any play from a save after launch is a prayer to the kraken.

Having said that, not all of my save files are corrupted, and usually the bug I encounter is gross spinning, not targeting.

So I loaded your save game and the first thing I get are two vessels in Kerbin Orbit. I am able to get each to target the other.

When were you unable to set target? Is it during close rendezvous? I usually swing the camera around to an angle that allows me to right click. I do agree that something needs to be implemented at those ranges to select different targets and docking ports. It can become difficult to select the one you want when a zone gets cluttered.

If we are stuck with the parts manager, then maybe there should be a toggle for each vessel in the area so that one could select Vehicle B's docking port while piloting Vehicle A (and without camera shenanigans).

A thousand right clicks got me nowhere. No response from the game at all. A reinstall with the same save had the same problem. Using a mod called Flightplan, I was able to target the docking ports and link them up fine, so at least I know it's me.

Looks like I'll have to start over on a new save. Not a dealbreaker, especially this early in the game. Thanks for the double-check.
