I recommend watching the attached ProcessToEndUpInFloor.mp4 first.
The video has it in mirrored symmetry. It doesn't need to be.

Steps to Replicate:

  1. Grab one of the following: A cockpit, pod, probe core, decoupler, or structural tube
  2. Next surface attach a Truss Part to the side.
  3. Then node attach a truss part to the side of the other one.
  4. Then change the root part to the end truss
  5. Save Craft
  6. Load Craft

Additional Information:
This doesn't happen to all parts.
Happens on reverting to VAB as well.

To have it end up like @Sylvi Fisthaug 's (merged below)in testing, I went to 8x symmetry

Not sure if able to reproduce, third time it has happened that I know of.

Yesterday I tried building an Energia rocket for my shuttle. Trying to attach the side booster subassemblies to the main booster caused the side boosters in pairs (2) to violently shake on the screen. Attaching them in said state caused them to multiply into chaos.

Loaded up said craft file today, the subassemblies have collapsed below the floor of the vab, and parts are no longer attached together.
