Hello fellow forum readers,

I have been a fan since .14 but now I am running .17, and It seems to me that I may have hit the brick wall in space. I used to be able to create great rockst that could get into orbits relativley smooth. Now I have my sights on Minmus, but every rocket design of mine collides with itself in the gravity turn, runs out of fuel, or just dosn't have the right TWR. ;.;

I guess I have a real engineering problem on my hands now huh, lol.

This is my first time on the forums and from what I can tell, you guys are very supportive, inteligent and able to help people with problems such as mine. Any hints and tips, or heck, a full design would even be great towards my efforts to landing on that small, distant, teal orb I call Minmus.:D

Welcome!

My advice would be to watch the G forces as your fuel runs out in your stages. Somewhere around 3-5 G's depending your rockets can start to thrust through the fuel tanks. I throttle to keep the G's at about 2.

My main heavy lifter has some crazy TWR variations, at various parts of my orbital burn it has anywhere from .8 to 6 TWR. So I'm not very consistent there either!

I don't know what is wrong with your spacecraft as I haven't tried to get to Minmus yet, maybe a picture taken in game could help us more to identify the problem.

I would suggest taking a look at some of the Minmus capable craft and take some ideas from them as that can help.

There have been little changes from previous versions as well as big ones, so even the familiar parts may not be doing what you're used to them doing in previous versions. For example, a 3-man pod is now REALLY big and heavy, compared to previous versions. Have you tried starting with something small and working your way up?

Three things.

1) End of mission readout is your friend.

It'll tell you what part the failure is starting at so you know where in your ship you need to strengthen/redesign.

2) Struts are your friend.

Seriously. Pretty much all designs will have improved stability/strength with well placed struts. Though keep in mind where you put them is a lot more critical than just adding more.. Bad strut placement just eats part count/cpu time with no real structural benefit.

3) Less is more.

Really.. The lighter your payload, the easier a lift stage will be to build, and you'll have an easier time getting it into orbit and to your goal. Unless your just screwing around trying to build the craziest stuff you can to see if it'll fly (which is fun too) generally you should try to use the absolute fewest parts you can get away with to accomplish your goal. Mass is your enemy. Fewer parts = less mass.

Also.. If your having problems with a ship, we can help you a lot more if you post .craft files.. or at minimum.. screenshots, of your ship.
