I think Hannu2 is quite aware it is a well studied problem which is why he referred to it.  I took his point to be that "panic braking" is tolerable and somewhat accepted for human drivers while AI is apparently held to a higher standard and expected to solved what is basically a gnarly problem even if a consistent ethical context exists

I think the trolley problem is way to abstract for an AI or even an human in an car accident setting. Except in one setting. Ditching as and driving your car off the road to avoid hitting something in the road is something an AI should know about. Its saved me twice.

As for the trolley problem her is the real life solution

My son has played with the moral machine (trolley problem) site at MIT for ages, usually trying to cause maximum mayhem, or just results he likes any particular time—kill a criminal regardless of other lives cost, or save all the pets, kill anyone crossing against the no walk, etc.

I looked at the setting in the image above for quite some time, Station has 3 tracks, two platforms and the center is bypass and was earlier then this was build was used to park trains for an train construction plant who was later closed. the 3 tracks contracts to 2 before the bridge. I knew it was an switch there but I did not believe it was active, just an way to fast switch trains in and out of the right track, they would stop at the platform so speed was low.
Now as the track is slightly downhill towards this station then steep downhill towards an rail hub I assume its its an option to derail runaway trains or wagons.
