Can you see other planets from Kerbin???

Recommended Posts

I've seen threads saying you can, and in the same thread saying you can't. Can you see the other planets (Duna, Eve, Jool, e.t.c.) from the surface of Kerbin or from LKO without mods (only mods to zoom in). Please, I thought this would be really cool for a cinematic video I'm making, for Bill to look up at Duna the night before he is sent tumbling toward his fate...

PS: If you can't how close do you need to be?

THANKS!

Yes.

I've, in STOCK (pure) KSP, seen Jool from LKO.

i managed to spot eve, while it was at the closest approach, using the bigger zoom. even then, it was hard to find and hard to distinguish from background sky.

i wasn't expecting that duna or jool would be visible, given the premise, but i trust if others say they have seen them

Was it just a pixel or like a whopping two pixels

...

Pretty much.

You'll need to target it in map view, as so you know where it is

And I was using a cupola at max zoom (iva)...

so pretty hard.

YES! IT IS!

proof

Spoiler

At closest point, Jool is visible.

Not quite great for visuals, as it is merely a tiny dot.

Further zoom enhanced by GIMP:

Duna is also visible at closest:

lower left corner is where duna is

For Eve, we have to get a little creative, as it's orbit is inwards to Kerbin's.

Yes, it’s possible. I’m not aware of any upper limit on distance where celestial bodies aren’t rendered in flight, though their relative size and distance will make seeing smaller targets like Eeloo much harder to spot. There’s a mod (camera tools maybe?) that can do clever camera tricks for cinematic effects, or there’s Tarsier Space Telescopes if you just want to look at them and get some easy science and pretty screenshots.

My mind is blown.  I'd not even considered this possibility and had just passively assumed objects outside of the body's SOI wouldn't be rendered.  Thinking about it though, that wouldn't make much sense as, for example, Kerbin and Mun are visible from Minmus.

I'm going to have to fire up my big gaming machine to do some planetary observation now!  Anyone know if there's an Alt-Az mount SCT mod available?

I only used Hyperedit to get Kerbin around in its orbit, by the way.

These screenshots show why the game really needed to have rendered stars instead of a static skybox. Everything else in the background is so blurry and muddy and you just have this tiny little dot.
