TBH, I'd rather see a Shuttle made from scratch, but you can use the NASA model for reference. It's unsuited for KSP use, though, the amount of work needed to make it run is about equal to just making a new model. Trust me, I've already worked with one guy who tried that. It didn't work out, the resulting model was unserviceable.

Also, you'd do best to focus on the Shuttle orbiter. CSS already has a pretty good looking external tank, and there's a very high quality Shuttle SRB released. Use the CSS external stack and build a new Orbiter for that. Also, very good SSMEs were already modeled by Tiberion, also for CSS.

In general, check out Component Space Shuttle mod and see what you can salvage from it. I think that we can reuse the launcher stack, SSMEs and CANADARM. Aside from the ET (which just needs a texture touch-up), they were made by big-name modelers out there, Tiberion and BobCat. No point breaking through open door here, and the orbiter is already enough of an undertaking.

I'm think we are need to talk with CSS creator. The CSS mod is great but it has 2 general bugs : the cargo bay closed in VAB And SPH and the aerodynamic bugs (he should fix it because in atmosphere the shuttle is unstable . I'm think the making of shuttle is really hard work :)

Love the progress that has been made for this but I can't help but wondering one thing... How demanding is this on a pc? I start lagging at around 200 parts but high poly model would drop that down.

I don't think it's that bad. The part count is low, so the game doesn't have to simulate a ton of different parts' physics.

Well, the CSS "creator" (at least, when it comes to configs) would be me, along with Cepheus. :) We didn't model it, though, the original developer has long since left KSP forums and left the mod to us. Due to broken landing gear and lack of source models, however, we were unable to make it work properly. I propose we start a model from scratch, I know it's a lot of work, but KSP community needs it. I can provide you with data about functionality, useful tips on dividing the Shuttle (check out BobCat's Buran, it's an example of a Shuttle-type orbiter with perfectly functional RCS and proper cargobay) and config files.

Already used that, sent files to BobCat. Nothing came out of it as of now, the files appear to be too broken. He's redoing Soviet Pack now, so I wouldn't expect a fixed CSS anytime soon.

I'm know this and this is a big problem. If timberion or bobcat want to make a relase the shuttle will be ready to use :)

BobCat already mention he's not gonna make a Shuttle from scratch. Tiberion isn't interested in IVAs, not to mention he has an annoying habit of keeping things in stock-compatible sizes. His SBS is good, but for this pack, we could use something realistically scaled, not to mention with a new cockpit. His Shuttle has wrong fuselage shape anyway, being based on stock Mk3 parts.

I haven't forgotten about the interiors, just so everyone knows. Once I finish unity, things will get a LOT easier because I can simply re-use parts for Destiny, node 2/3, Columbus, JEM, etc. I don't know anything about KSP file formats so I will leave it up to you guys to texture them and convert them from a .blend into .mu. I'm trying not to get outrageous with the poly count, but a cap on triangles would help me.

Also, I had sort of an epiphany as far as interiors go. I had entered a Mir module (kvant, i think) that had no interior, and I found myself looking at the other modules from the inside of my module- everything lined up and was visible. This means that if you made the interior visible here, you could let kerbals sit in the module and see into other modules all correct according to whatever configuration is chosen. This MIGHT be accomplished by modeling interiors as part of the modules' world models, and putting an animated hatch so that they are not visible normally. It's just a theory, but it might just work.

If you don't think you can make the Shuttle, then you could try something simpler. Rassvet would be a good start, just keep in mind that those two things you can see attached to it's exterior aren't really it's parts, but elements of Nauka module that were launched with Rassvet.
