The MachingBird Challenge!

Recommended Posts

I've gotten 2,135 m/s in a stock plane with a scant fifteen parts... From my personal experience, less is clearly more in this competition.

Incidentally, I can't get my pictures to post, as I am a pathetic newbie who knows very little about forum-going. How can I upload some pictures of my tiny plane?

In all honestly, its "most intakes wins" challenge. The higher you go, the higher the terminal velocity is. Pretty much means you can go 999999999 m/s with just 1 unit of thrust if you are high enough.

There is a maximum altitude for this challenge, I think its 36km max. But this is also why I use FAR and DRE, I refuse to deal with KSPs lackluster aerodynamic model and re-entry model. I tried it back when I first got the game, and my first attempt to launch a rocket and achieve orbit was a success, not only a success but I was orbiting at 350km x 350km day 1 launch 1. So I got those two mods and the game became far more challenging and interesting.

My thoughts exactly, but i'll check it out.

Well I just proved it can be done, but I had to use B9 parts and the SABRE engines, and change over to the rocket mode when I hit mach 5.5.

As you can see over 3,260m/s or about Mach 9.7!

Doesn't that break rules 1 and 5?

Ok, I'm done with this frustrating challenge. How utterly irksome to be be SOOOOO close... and never get there. HOURS of my life I've wasted on this IMPOSSIBLE challenge and had a freaking blast.

Unfortunately, my best attempt isn't all that stellar. But, it's not too shabby and I think I have a rather unique plane that I haven't see done quite like this.

Gents, 2,275 over land was my best. I present... Skoopz

I think that makes about 9 laps. Took this while still in orbit before I landed. I'd hoped to have a shot of it on the runway but landing was not it's forte.

Thanks again for a fun challenge, maybe one of these days, I'll break the 2300 barrier.

It wasn't for the challenge, I already hold the top spot in the FAR Mod division, I was answering his question.

Which is why I quoted him in the response.

Err... where does it say there is a maximum altitude? I don't remember ever making that rule, and if I did, most of the entries have failed by that criteria.

Unless, I gather, that there is a context I am missing and you are not actually talking about THIS challenge.

I will work on updating the boards on the morrow.

No I was mistaken, I was thinking of another challenge.

  • 2 weeks later...

All right, here is my entry for the challenge. Unfortunately I don't have landing pictures because I got distracted a little and wound up orbiting Kerban at 80k with no way to maneuver....poor Bob. I'm fairly certain I could have achieved a higher speed if I hadn't achieved orbit, but I'm fine with the run it made and a purely jet driven ssto, heh.

barrenwaste, how did you get intakes stacked in-line with the base mounting nodes? I have never seen anybody mount a pod on that without cheating. Just sayin'

Anyways, I intend on updating the rules later to clarify for people that the R.A.P.I.E.R. is not considered a jet for the purposes of this challenge.

I used an I beam. I attached an I beam to the cockpit, then used my symmetry mode to put two fuel tanks with air intakes and jets on it. Then I buggered in close with the view and used struts to make sure the thing didn't shake itself apart. I used quite a lot of clipping to do it, but I don't use console cheats so it can all be reproduced easily enough. You just have to turn them a few times to get them to light green in symmetry. Also, it's quite a bit heavier than it looks, because it has four fuel tanks and two engines. Clipping stuff in like that without console cheats or mods is kinda my thing. To mount the intakes themselves I just use the little square struts. If you invert them you can mount air intakes to both sides of the square strut.

Speaking of witch, I think the new update brings some changes to the way air intakes work. Using only 4 ram intakes on a test plane (at least 1t of dead weight) i got to 2326m/s. Also Radial intakes seem to be quite good now.

I think it would be good time to post a new thread for the 0.23, it would clean things too :)

Oh and as long as the craft doesn't have any oxidizer on board i see no problems using RAPIERS, they aren't as good as Turbojets, as their max speed is only 2200m/s.

New version - new attempt

All craft is stock (as always), only mods used are "partless" - more for fun and information, and not affect craft or flight.

monopropellant in cockpit was set to 0

take off

fast and high as always

so... 2365 m/s on stock manned craft.

Something was changed in this version, i think we need new leaderboard

My speed with the Mini Flyer Speed Edition. It wasn't even meant to be in this challenge!

Although there is Oxidizer in the resources tab, I used tweakables to get rid of it from the FL-T200 (or something like that)

Stock, by the way.

It's unmanned, no mods. I can post the craft file if you like.

Welp, this might have to be moved because of 0.23, but I was reading this challenge and got interested.

I took my first ever SSTO, just built it a couple weeks ago in career mode in 0.22, and rebuilt it here in sandbox 0.23 to see how fast she'd move.

And then I gubered the screenshots and must have hit F2 or something when I hit my top speed of 2257m/s. Best screenshot is 2246m/s. Still no true machingbird, but she's a beast of a spaceplane and I was just happy to hit Mach 6.

Also, my flight profile was probably sub-optimal; I'm still pretty new at flying SSTOs. Might give it another crack when I have time to kill.

Stock, Manned, No mods.

I know there's a nuke on there - this is my regular SSTO after all - but you can see by the oxidizer it's never fired during the flight.

Now to really get going and build one just for this!

Evans, thank you for having all the screenshots and your resource tab open in all of them! Because it is clear you did not use oxidiser, I can accept this.

NOW, there is no official record I can see that something was changed, but it definitely was, so... I'll figure out what to do with the .23 submissions ASAP. Unfortunately, the Xmassening is upon us and I cannot guarantee my presence near interwebbington for a week or two.

barrenwaste, is your entry .22 or before, or is it .23?
