What did you do in KSP1 today?

Worked on creating a rover/aircraft hybrid for those pesky waypoint contracts in Fine Print. The first attempt handled like a drunk skunk, but the second attempt (using the F100) completed the contract.

The first "Madman's AirRover" barely managed to land on Airbase Island. Any landing you walk away from is a good one, right?

A flight anomaly caused one booster to not separate cleanly and it kicked out the top most empty fuel stack (out of three), prematurely separating the lower stage and letting me ride precariously on top of the lit (and uncontrollable) candle. Luckily, still made orbit.

And I think I danced with some form of Kraken last night. I didn't notice it until I went to look for a new contract and saw that I had lost my completed contracts.

So I wrote a script to walk through my OS backups (I love my backups) and find which backup has the most "contract_finished" references so I could repair things. I just might hold onto this...

Today was a light day in my KSP ... just hauling parts for my LKO space hub to be ( in this case a 6 way senior docking port connector )...

And some tests for cash , science and for testing of my medium size SSTO jet/rocket hybrid. Still need to learn the exact place to deorbit to get close enough of KSC for making the rest to go via jet engines , though ...

Built the first spaceplane that I'm happy with. It's designed to rescue stranded kerbonauts and transfer crew and science to and from LKO. It handles easily enough for a poor spaceplane pilot like me, and is reasonably easy on the eyes.

Even Bill seems pleased. I've since removed two of the four 24-77s, the circularization was only 80m/s so it doesn't need much orbital TWR. I've also removed the solar panels and installed an RTG "cockpit heater" to better balance it.

Props to cantab for the cockpit heater quip.

Built a Duna lander. No engine braking needed. I still don't get everyone that says, "Chutes won't slow you down enough on Duna." Yeah, well, this 2 Man lander can complete with 2 of everything science on it says other wise. Touches down around 7m/s with chutes only.

Over-warped while sending Bob and Bill on a mission to plant a Polandball flag on the Mun. They were honorably discharged.

So goes the prophecy. I should have expected it.

I have sent a science station in polar orbit around Minmus (power module from KSO + stock lab + 5 docking ports and few solar panels). Than I sent lander and crew capsule to the station in Apollo-like configuration. Lander docked to the station with no problem, while crew capsule run out of mono...I managed to dock it to the station thanks to Smart A.S.S. and gentle use of throttle.

Sorry for no pics, KSP decides to crash when I take SS.

Frank_G, that's a pretty neat rover. Do the front wheels get grip being angled like that?

Thank you! The motor has been disabled for the front wheels as grip isn´t essential for that pair. It stabilizes the rover a lot, both to the sides (you really cant make it flip) and to the front, when braking while moving downhill, preventing a roll over.

I sent up a refueler.

It was a simple mission; Refuel. ReMono. And Swap out Jeb for Melly...

Well, after docking, refueling/monoing, undocking and reentering atmo - guess what I forgot to do...

Haha, well you wouldn't believe how many times I sent a vehicle with a single command pod to do an orbit rescue contract...

Today i launched my first row of Duna missions in .24.2 career mode. Two ships were sent simultaneously. One carried a single rover and the other a 42 ton fuel payload for the planned Duna Surface Base, including a landing system for the payload and in addition 3 mapping satellites (using ScanSAT parts) for detailed surface scans. The rover was parked in a 60 km equatorial orbit, while the other ship entered a 750 km polar orbit to deploy the 3 satellites first. After deployment of all 3 satellites and a 35 day scanning period, the rover was sent to a promising spot on the surface, to check if the terrain is suitable for a base... after driving around for almost 2 hours, i finally found a satisfying flat areal, capable of supporting a stable base construction and offer enough flat space for all kind of landing vehicles.

The rover design is a total success. Even going downhill while steering and hitting the brakes at nearly 15 m/s won´t make it flip over...

[edit] I thought this might look nice too ;)

Yesterday I was continuing my Jool 5 mission. Landed on Tylo. Not enough fuel to return to orbit. Rage deleted the save.

Bill and Jeb touched down yesterday on Tylo as well, though they probably wished they hadn't run out of fuel prematurely. Their ship is a wreck, they no longer have a means to generator power, but their capsule survived. They too now await rescue on Tylo.

I ran afoul of a really (un)fortunate glitch. On my super-modded game I had a really big complicated ship with 70km of deltaV. It is primarily ion powered, and to save funds in career mode I launched it with empty ion tanks, flew it to my Karbonite mine, took FOREVER to convert and fill the tanks, then put it back into orbit of Kerbin to attach a couple landers/satallites for a Jool mission. Just now I accepted a contract to return science data from the space around Kerbin. Easy money, I thought, since this ship was in orbit. I switched to the ship orbiting 1,000Km above kerbin, and it instead recovered the thing! So basically, I lost the craft, all the equipment, all that xenon that I converted and my 95% ready for Jool ship. One more lander and it was done. I could hit all the moons, drop a probe into the atmosphere, and regenerate more fuel from an onboard karbonite mine/refinery while in orbit. On the other hand, I just recovered 15+ million funds worth of xenon, and this ship did have some design problems I figured out before the mission started...

You could also use fuel tanks as landing legs or put the engines in side positions and use a central part as landing foot ;) BTW nowadays you can't use winglets for that ( they sink in the ground ... ).

Anyway, if you want to do that, just take notice that some engines have really low tolerance to shock ( not as bad as in earlier days, but you still need to be careful ). SRB , for a example, will explode if you hit the ground directly with them even at 2m/s ...
