How are you landing your rovers?

Where are you trying to land that thing!? Your skycrane is huge. You've got way more power and fuel than you need.

Atmospheric:

Vacuum or thin atmosphere:

Edit... and I fail on 2 counts... 1 not noticing this thread is old... and 2 not noticing it was really long as well.

If there is atmosphere I can use parachutes, then I MIRV my rover in.

The only trick is if I want the lander and Rover to survive and land together I have to keep them within 2KM of each other or one will be deleted.

When it works... it is awesome looking.

Really Big rovers have their own engines for landing. Sometimes they drop the engines once landed but most keep them so they can take off later -

I've done a couple skycranes that gently lower the rovers using KAS winches (for that Curiosity feeling). These are usually small/medium rovers. -

I quite often just bolt them to the side of a lander and puts tanks of roughly the same weight on the other side.

I've recently made a 100% stock (which is rare for me) apollo craft that has a small rover attached to one side of the lander;

It uses its SAS and some RCS to turn it onto its wheels when it disconnects.

and I've also done a modded upgrade to that craft that packs a larger and much faster (and more stable) folding rover. It folds up in a way that defies sensible physics to be about the same size as the above rover, but unpacked it is quite a bit bigger.

(This should be a gif, but doesn't seem to work unless you click on it.)

But my absolute fav way of delivering a rover is landing it inside/on-top of a landing pod that then doubles up as a fuel station for the rover.

This was one I did awhile back that lands in a couple different ways depending on planet. It either lands in two parts (if there is an atmo) or the fuel station section acts as landing engines for non-atmo landings -

And then there was FRANK (the transforming rover) who lands inside a pretty big landing pod which also doubles up as a fuel depot and has two smaller side attached support rovers. -

(jump to about 2:30 for the landing and rover deploy)

Reminds me of A.M.Y. from Red Planet - craft file?!

Tons of mods for sure?

I landed my first moon rover like so. It was a bit messy because upon arrival i figured out there was no way to get the lander stage off the rover without undocking and squeezing out from under it with the hope it wouldnt topple and crush/trap the rover. Lessons were learned. For Duna I use a small descent stage that can apply some burn and the final part is simply done with parachutes.

There are several ways I delver a rover. http://i.imgur.com/lTni9p0.png%5B/IMG

Mostly 2 rovers mounted on the side of a ship then decouple at landing zone. Not all were successful.

-snip-

...while I lower the rover using Kerbal Attachment System mod

Clever use of KAS. Never thought of using it while using MechJeb at the same time. That's a true Skycrane. I've seen a picture of someone doing it, but never explaining how to keep the Skycrane steady.

I thought of having a design like this, but it would work as a VTOL that can lift stranded rovers off the planet surface, without actually landing itself.

my minmus or mun lander is my rover, i hv my landers land with wheels and rockets,

and they are capable of getting back to kerbin,

they work as my kethane transoprtation, and they are docked at my kerbin station when not in use, when my kethane reserve is low, i fly and land them on my kethane drilling camp on minmus
