[Showcase] Post your Bases

Recommended Posts

I was going to release it after I figure out all the landers and launch vehicles and all that kind of stuff to actually get it all to Minmus and assembled there. Would you rather wait for that or do you just want the raw pieces now?

Actually I rather wait for the complete. If you need any help with it I will gladly do so just need the parts mass to be able to build a launcher.

I've pretty much finished my base. I might add more Cupola modules to make the ends prettier, but it's generating enough lag as it is. I'm a little disappointed with the number of legs it has on it, and this is something I will be working to address for the next version- probably on Duna which will require a new strategy for landing. The weird rocket in the background was meant as a ferry to the space station. I wanted to land it on the landing pad, but it was too hard and too big. I'll be sending a new, smaller, 1 man rocket at some point just to complete the look.

So I built this on the Mun:

Base was built up over 11 launches including the crew shuttle. The crawler transporters turned out to be a great success in handling spacecraft on the ground:

The big kethane tanks and the heavy converter should give some clues as to how I'm going to use this base. Yes it's going to be a fuel terminal where kethane trucks drive the harvested gas to be processed at the base. Tanker rockets are then to land near the base and be carried back to dock with the launch complex, filled with kethane-produced fuel and then launched back to orbit to ship fuel all around the Kerbin SOI.

My first base on another world, built in 0.19, was the Mun Arch Research Facility (toured here by foul-mouthed space trucker Herbo Kerman). It's on the flat plateau just South of one of the Mun Arches. There's a little close-up lab sitting at the Arch itself.

It's all independent huts-on-stilts. From left to right we have the "Betsy" utility tractor, the crew cab and the forklift. This can be driven under any of the base's modules. It uses landing gear wheels to lift the prong up so it can dock to the underside of a module. The gear and the module's legs are then retracted so Betsy can move the module into position. I was absolutely elated this system worked! Unfortunately the parts count got way out of control and the base now lags phenomenally.

Continuing on, in the middle there's a light mast surrounded by two crew shuttles and two general purpose two-man rovers (added in 0.20 ). To the right are the command center and laboratory module, along with three habitation modules.

After this base I built the Minmus Low-Gravity Experiments Facility, from where Jeb fired a space cannon.

A much more economical structure, it was launched in one piece with all four modules stacked on top of each other. An RCS tug was used to assemble them in orbit, after which it was flown to Minmus and landed.

The next project is this single-piece, 69 part, 20 ton base which was originally designed for Laythe. Parts count has been found to be the major bottleneck in further base development so this is relatively light, though I privately think it looks awesome with the tall mast and weird antennae globe. I'm still not sure where I want to deploy it. I haven't been to Duna since 0.17...

Daaammmnnnn... all of these bases are awesome!

I have been using KSP for a few day now. I am orbiting, docking, and landing on the Mun. I have a small station orbiting Kerbin, and small station orbiting Mun. I want to start building bases.

Is there a tutorial for building and landing bases?

Totally ganked Temstar's idea. It's a real PITA to put this thing together on minmus tho. I launched sections using carriers similar to the refueling tower on the left, 4 sections per launch. This was put together with three launches (two module carriers, one crew hab. If you like this kind of base design, not that the kethane drills don't reach as shown. I can get kethane by raising the legs around the fuel bunker, then the whole base tilts towards that side :P Next base will be on duna, and should be much more complex....just going to dock several module carriers together and shove 'em out there with a bunch o NERVA

Finally finished my new version of the Armstrong Base, on the Mun. It took about 18 launches to assemble.

The biggest problem with it is every time I switch to it, it bounces - I suspect because the ground is uneven.

The primary objective was to keep the part count low, though I think I need legs for it, so I'll probably add them back in the next version.

Anyway, here it is:

Docking was hard at times. With uneven ground the ports didn't always line up, so I had to ram them together at times.

There is currently 25 Kerbals living there. Thanks to the new crew management, it was a simple matter of throwing them in the hitchhiker module on launch. Previous bases I had to build massive crew ships and load them before launch which was a real pain.

i like the legless base, it's too bad you have so much trouble with it. my part count was killing me, had extremely low framerate.

The biggest problem with this base is that it bounces when I go to it. In fact, last night when I looked at it, it bounced so hard the tower broke off. I don't know if legs will solve this problem, but I am going to try. Also, if I were to put this on a frozen lake on Minmus, I suspect there will be no problem, although I like putting bases on Minmus high up, overlooking the lakes.

I liked Wayfare's design, so I made my own version of it and sent it to the Mun...

That's Jeb and his 16 newly hired space cadets. The base is sitting inside one of the giant craters on nice flat ground and is also on top of the largest concentration of Kethane. I'm going to add a power plant, mining facility, fuel storage and connect it all up with KAS. Plus I'll drop down some toys for the Kerbals to play with. I'll post the completed complex when I am finished making it

Awesome! I'm glad I could inspire you and that is one sweet base on the Mun :) Looking forward to how it turns out as a mining facility!
