KGas Industries Asteroids

Hello Everyone,

I have been an avid fan of KSP for a couple of months now. I also love the add on aspect of this game. I was really excited to see the release of DRAkTEC Asteroids revamp of JellyCubes, but I also really liked the The_Duck's old Part Gravity Mod for adjusting the gravity of the asteroids.

However, I hated not begin able to at least get on to the surface or stay close by...so I decided to try my hand at some modelling and here is the result, Introducing:

KGas Industries - Asteroids!

I am hoping to upload it to Spaceport soon!

KGas Industries, Kerbins most well renowned industrial company decided it was time to venture out into the solar system to find rocks to mine and exploit. However, the searched proved fruitless. Thanks to the wonder of Big Bang Technology, We are proud to introduce a new line of asteroid ready for Kethane extraction.

Included in this pack are the plugin information for The-Duck's part gravity plugin (all credit due to him/her) as well as 8 (count 'em 8!) a asteroids in both gravitational and non-gravitational varieties.

The Asteroids included are:

The Brown Beast - A brown Asteroid about 1600m in Diameter

The Ice Box - An Ice covered Asteroid with rocky poles - 500m in Diameter

The Small Mun - A smaller version of our favorite satellite - 2000m in diameter

The Oblongs - 4 oddly shaped asteroids from 500-1400m in Diameter

The Red October - An Iron Rich asteroid - 1000m in Diameter

EDIT: I also just added 5 more small ones after it was requested. These are small enough to be captured and manipulated with KAS, etc.

All of these become visible at about 100-75 km away. You can get very close and touch the surface, but I don't know how you'd be able to get it to have you stick there. I am open to suggestions on everything. This is my first attempt at modding, modeling or anything so feel free to be as critical as you like. I just enjoy having more things to see and do close to Kerbin. I haven't tried to de-orbit them, it would be interesting to hear about someone trying. I did smack one by accident and it sent it on a crazy rotation, was cool to see though.

In Order to get them into orbit you need to follow the quicksave editing instructions. Scott Manely has

video on YouTube which is super helpful.

Below are some pictures of the Red Guy up close

Here,

Here and Here

Let me know what you all think of this and I will totally work with anyone or let anyone do anything they want. I have the original blends if anyone would want those too.

Thanks,

Kevin Gustafson,

Earth Representative

First of: this is sooooo cool!! I'll download it as soon as i can. Second point: i believe there is a mod/addon with a grappling hook thingy maybe that is usable for sticking to the asteroids?

Or SQUID mod. Asteroids! With kethane! Like Fladder wrote: this is sooooo cool :D Only bad thing is necessity of Hyperedit (if there is one cheaty mod out there, it is it IMO). Can't you add a plugin that will spawn those suckers somewhere in system on random coordinates?

I agree!, but since their size i think the orbits should correspond somewhat. Maybe it is possible to create an asteroid belt?

you don't have to use hyper edit, do a quicksave edit

also when it comes to attaching to an asteroid... either squid legs or kas would be good as mentioned before...also the new kas lets ya add some EVA functions to other parts...im not sure but it may be possible to make a docking port that could be attached to the asteroid in EVA....

these look great, gonna have to make me an asteroid belt

edit: id love to see a kethane asteroid as well

I think there may be using new KAS detatch/attach feature....not sure yet, but im gonna try

If they have the surface attach parameter set correctly, you should be able to just slap a docking port on it in the VAB

yea, but that kinda depends on the size..i had that thought with the dratek or whatever ones, but you cant see the outside of em in the vab, they were to big

edit: trying to test, but they wont hold still once launched in order to F5 save....maybe hyperedit is needed....

Can you make it work with the gravity plugin?

It's a fairly easy plugin to write and the old one is most likely not going to be updated, so I can probably throw something together for you. :)

Is there a way to connect a docking port to the asteroids?

In theory you can use the new KAS to make the docking ports dynamically surface-attachable, but it'd require some config editing and testing... Might be worth it though...

I have two folders in the Directory. One for no gravity asteroid and ones for gravity asteroids using the Gravity Part plugin from the_duck.

Glad you guys liked it.

Also, they all are packed with Kethane, I just got KAS today so I haven't tried it yet but that sounds like what I was looking for.

As Far as Hollowed out asteroids are concerned I could do that...I think...just messing with collision models so you could make an entry point and have what amounts to a second asteroid inside as your "base".

I had thought about making them big docking ports, but thought that might be too much trouble.

Theoretically you could make an asteroid belt, but boy would that take forever!!!

Strange, for some reason the gravity isn't working for me anymore :(

edit - I think I've found the problem. If you find the line "radius = 6" in the part cfg and change it to 1000, it should give the asteroids gravity.

Asteroids that small have negligible gravity anyhow. You don't so much land on one was fly your probe up next to it and park at a distance of zero. That said, once you accomplish that, you should rest on the surface and not orbit away like you would if there was literally no gravity at all. As long as you don't move. Sneezing is enough for escape velocity...
