Vertically Launched SSTO

Recommended Posts

So I'm building a vertical SSTO (I know, insane, buts i know its been done.). The craft does pretty well until the edge of the atmosphere, where I have to switch to the rockets. I was originally using a LV-45, but that didn't work out, so i swapped it for any aerospike. I haven't tested the aerospike version yet, so i don't know if it will fail.

I'm having mechjeb to control the jets so they don't flame out mid ascent. I only have three ideas. One: add MOAR intakes. Two: use only 2 turbojets. Three: get the canned air mod. So anyone willing to help? :)

Here's a picture:

If you don't care what it looks like, switching to the Mk1 to Mk2 adapter will give you significantly lower mass and increase your speed by a good bit. I suspect that the ship as shown above can make orbit. I'd give it a try, but I don't have mechjeb.

That looks somewhat familliar :)

This little beast is single stage to Laythe, including the payload on the nose (total of 10 tonnes)Firebat%200.jpg

It has a total of 36 intakes, tho I have since removed most of them and just use some custom intakes that I have edited, to lower the part count.

Swap out the tanks. If you use 2 MK2 tanks instead of the 4 MK1 you save weight and get more fuel. If you don't care for visuals that much you can use the MK2 cockpit to save weight. Also, use either full wings or none, that bit won't get you much lift and the engine gimbal should be enough for maneuvering. You strut too much and the structural hardpoints are unnecessary. Lastly, the landing legs are overkill. Use the lighter ones.
